1st gen suspension, 2.5” or 4” lift questions???

    i just bought a 2000 1st gen tundra and immediately bought some wheels and tires for it, im wanting to get a lift for the future and i’m currently trying to do an overlanding build.

    i’m preferring a 4” lift but i’m okay with a 2.5”, i definitely need to get bigger leafs for the rear since i expect it to be heavy with the overlanding gear, and will get a steel front bumper as well.

    does anyone know any specific lifts or combination of parts to have the best cost-performance ratio??

    i’m 19 and pretty new to this and need as much help as possible thanks!!

    Nice find! Welcome aboard.

    I would read this whole thread, but particular the "suspension...." section. There are a handful of links there that will get you situated with what works/what doesn't for that sweet AC. (Also please put your year, cab, engine, drivetrain, etc. details in your profile like mine--will help us answer your questions faster in the future.)

    i have a 2000 utility cab SR5 4x4 tundra and when i say suspension i mean kinda everything, ball joints, control arms, coilovers, leaf springs, shocks, anything that would compliment the rest of the lift.

    sorry for the lack of information i’m new to this

    For our trucks, at least on this site:
    Regular Cab or RC = single cab, one bench seat, seats three
    Access Cab or AC = "best cab" or "extended" cab, 2 rear doors are "suicide" doors, seats 2 or 3 in front seat and 3 hobbits or full-sized double-amputees in the back seat
    Double Cab or DC = four real doors

    Having similar aspirations and not knowing exactly what I want to do either, I can't wait to watch you spend all your money on new suspension and make some mistakes I can avoid. : )

    Dude, you're cracking me up :rofl:

    OP, I've been there. Just go the full 3", it'll give you a decent lift and won't put a ton of extra strain on the rest of your vehicle (looking at you, lower ball joints). I'm not very familiar with over-landing, so accommodating the extra weight is better explained by someone else.

    I only lifted mine enough to level it out, so now I'm looking into a complete 3" set-up, along with upgrading the lower control arms from Solo and new steering knuckles/spindles from a 2006 Tundra. That'll let me use the bigger ball joints from that year. Probably gonna run me $5k when it's all said and done. And that's just the parts! Thankfully, labor is free...

    Then come back to us. Actually, you may just want to read the entire 1st and 2nd reply of that thread. Even if you don't think you "need" to know the info ... you should at least read it once.

    Mud trucks need alot of lift, seems tundras just need alot of trimming. Pic for inspiration (not mine).

    Man, that is a cool looking truck. 37's on only a 2.5"?? So, you're saying there's a chance...just need to cut the entire fender well out.

    Front suspension lifts do not help you clear bigger tires on IFS at all. They simply do not. The only way they help you "clear tires" is at ride height on pavement. All IFS suspension lifts will do is change your static height at ride height. Sure, you can have a coil over maxed out to give you a huge hub-to-fender measurement where it looks like you fit a big tire no problem, but your suspension will still compress all the way and your tire will end up tubbed in the fender just like it would have on stock suspension, all in the same spots.

    Cranking coil overs might make it where you need more force to fully compress your shocks and stuff your wheels, but you also lose your downtravel and risk pulling apart your shocks.

    Oh for sure, my post was mostly in jest. It's cool to see a truck like that, but doing it properly requires quite a bit of modification.

    I'd like to keep my height, but with longer, softer shocks and springs. Stock bumpstops, but be able to drop a wheel like a foot or so.

    Maybe get a little silly with the rear.
