I have a John Deere LX280 lawn tractor and recently sharpened the blades and replaced them. When replacing the blades, the Deflector Cup (goes above the blade and keeps crap out of the spindle) on one blade came loose and I pushed it back on and replaced the blade. Afterward, the mower made a rubbing/friction sound from that side of the mower. I suspect that I did not seat the deflector cup securely as required and there is friction between the cup and the blade but would like to tap into an expert's opinion. How are the deflector cups attached? Just press on? Thanks for any help!

Wish I could help. I have a cub cadet zero turn with 3 blades and they don't have any kind of deflector or shroud above the blades.
Can you manage to get some decent pics?

Maybe look at a parts diagram and see if there is anything that could have broken down over time. Thinking maybe a rubber type of washer between the cup and the blade would solve your problem and the original might have just rotted away. Just a guess though. Good luck!

Thanks, Ron. I'll get the mower on my lift this week and see if I can get some pics.

Thanks for the thinking, Dan. The parts diagrams I have seen don't show washer between the cup and the top of the blade. When I looked up the part number (M157142 - Deflector Cup) on Amazon, one of the reviews of the part said that it just attaches by way of a pressure fit around the spindle. It must clip in some way and has some slots in the cup along with the hole that the spindle sticks through for the blade bolt. I'll hopefully know more when I get the mower lifted.
