5100 Bilstein install difficulty?

Bought a pair of 5100s for a 2021. Wondering how difficult the install is.

I did my own spacer lift on my 2019 4runner and it was a PITA. I can afford the labor, but was wondering if it is easier or harder than a typical shock/strut replacement.

 

Harder

 

You have to remove the shock assembly, use spring compressors, transfer spring to 5100 with circlip set to desired lift, reassemble new shock, reinstall. The new shock assembly will be longer than the space it’s going into, so you’ll have to cram it in with straps and pry bars. Doable, but more frustrating and challenging than just bolting a spacer on top of a shock assembly.

 

Buy this spring compressor and it will make life much easier.

Not very difficult. Did 4600 -> 5100 conversion to take a break and relax after miserable failure in transmission rebuild (for my other vehicle). This spring compressor will do it all on any car/truck, in a safely manner:

The truck will ride harsher, I'd recommend the lowest setting and a spacer on top of the strut, as already said. In fact, I'm going mid to low + spacer myself soon.

 

Eibach +2.5" springs on 5100's at the lowest setting is exactly 3" of lift and still rides like stock.
A 1/4" thick spacer will be needed on drivers side to even out the 1/2" lean.

I just did this 2 weeks ago and couldnt be happier.

 

In MA we mostly drive over allies-bombed German asphalt imported in 1945. Any suspension change will be noticed immediately by even the most modest drivers.
