I’m interested in getting a trail camera or 2. Recommendations, cautions, or any ideas and suggestions are appreciated

I’d go with a head unit with multiple camera inputs and use these Natika cameras because they have a narrower view than most on Amazon that allows you to see more clear. I’ve been using them for years and haven’t had a problem.

NATIKA Backup/Front/Side View Camera: No Distortion Effect Starlight Night Vision HD Metal Flush or Surface Mount CVBS | AHD Reverse Rear View Backup Camera for Cars Pickup Trucks SUVs RVs Vans https://www.amazon.com/dp/B083SF5VVN

Edit: I use double sided Gorilla Glue tape to mount them wherever I want and they stay there. I also did the flush mount in my bumpers and body panel as well.

I have Stealth Cam and Wildgame Innovations. Both are okay I suppose. Wildgame innovations were a budget camera and I've had power issues with some of the Stealth Cams. I want to try Browning or something else new when/if the next TC purchase comes.

I had the spypoint cellular camera that sent pics directly to my cellphone. It worked great for a few years, then took a crap. Just before it stopped working, I bought a spypoint micro and tried adding it. They told me it had to be 2 separate cameras and paid for separately (for the cell service pic transmission). Then the first camera took a crap and I didn't renew the service. It's been about 2 yrs, so I don't know if they have better cameras now, or offer a multi cam pkg deal, etc, but that was my experience.
I bought them to keep an eye on the new house while it was a construction zone. Now that the house is there, I have actual security cams set up. I was going to reuse the wireless cams on the property to actually watch game and trespassers, but I need to look into new options too.
I'll be watching the thread for info and post anything useful that I find out (unlike this post ;))

So, does every camera that will link to the cell phone require a subscription?

That's how spypoint had it set up a few yrs ago. I bought a second camera and asked if I could add it to my subscription, so I could get pics sent to my phone from both. They said I would have to start a new account/subscription for the new camera and they would be separate. I thought that was a pain in the ass.
I'd still like to have 2-3 cameras around the property, but I have to look into a pkg deal, where they are all linked together on one account.

I suppose that the alternative is to have cameras that require a usb cable and a download?
