leak underneath bed-rail cover??

I have the diamondback bed cover, and it worked great until the first heavy rain and subsequent rainy days. It all started when we were on the highway from a long road trip and our belongings got wet really bad. Nevertheless, I contacted the company, they worked with me to resolve the issue, and as we were trying to troubleshoot the leak source, I was told that bed-rail cover can cause leak when it is bend from being tight around the middle clamps. So I took off the bedcover, and let the truck rest in the direct sunlight, luckily the bed-rail cover went back to its original form and no gap was noticed. Now, I figured if I apply sealant then it will maximize the waterproof function, it was easy straight forward as shown below, my question? did anyone tried similar sealant application before? what are the long term observations?

I think this is what companies like Superpacific campers, GFC campers, etc do when they install their campers.

 

That's what I did in an attempt to treat the possible source of water leak, not sure if future problems will arise out of this mini project.

 

I know this is an old thread, but did the attempts to seal under the caps work?

 

Following. I have the DB cover as well and it leaks a fair amount at the corners and center panel. I added tailgate seals, and additional foam padding around the joints of the center panel, but no luck. DB's solution was to send me new weather stripping for all the panels, so that's next on my list.

 

It is much better after redoing it again, here is my review after a year:
when you apply silicone sealant run over it again to create 2-3 mm paste. that will help eliminating uneven surface when you apply pressure specially after installing the bed cover. if you don't feel comfortable applying paste you can use weather stripping seal liker this (I used both sealant and weather stripping):

Cut the weather stripping into half (width less than an inch) and run it underneath the bed rail. worked great for me. The next step is to sand the upper part, when it rains hard or I drive on the highway there is a leak from around the uneven surface. please see attached picture.

I'll do it this coming spring while installing CBI bumper/winch/light bar.

I'm also contemplating sanding down the pattern on the caps as well. Honestly might be necessary since the weather stripping on the DB cover doesn't contour very well.

@Oakman - do you happen to have any pictures of the underside of the plastic bedrail caps? Also, how did you remove them? When I tried to do it, it felt like I was going to break the clips holding them onto the bed.

 

Removing them was easy, just do not put more power or over angle them when you are pulling up, start from the bed gate, they are easy to break,

This weatherstripping you’re putting down is foam. It’s not a sealant. Looks like it’s adhesive backed on both sides correct?

 

The raised edges might also create little gaps where water can leak through.

I wonder if you can actually add weather stripping on the inner wall of the cap towards the inside of the bed so that it traps any water from dripping down.

That's a good idea, I haven't tried it. So far no issues underneath the bedrail cover

 

If you’re looking to totally stop water you’ll need something that’s more of a gasket. I don’t know how deep you wanna go with trying to stop water. But there are better options
