Yeah I agree that super charged engines benefit a great deal more then n/a, what is also surprising is that there isn't more with the rxp I felt like I was the only one ... however the radium ones do look very nice !

At my last oil change of 5k, i did dump out 1/3 of the can that oil was caught. So, to me, it’s worth the $150. Anytime i can keep as much oil out from entering the intake, I’d be happy.

had one on my SC tacoma, thing was about 1/2 full after 5k miles at oil changes, mocha style. Boosted for sure I would get one, not boosted eh.

    see sig for mods.....
I get the purpose and have one on my Mustang (2020 Bullitt) and have added on highly modified and boosted cars over the years.

But as the 5.7 is port injected and I am N/A I was wondering. I was planning on adding one to the PCV side when I started towing to help, but for my general daily use I wasn't planning, but hey, I haven't done any mods recently....

I doubt that the 0 will have any more or less blow-by than a 5w. I'm at 80K and the motor doesn't burn a drop in 5k changes.

I had about 1/4 of the cup full after 3k miles when I installed it on my truck (0W-20 oil, NA). So not a lot, but not "nothing" either. I was actually a bit surprised at the amount. I know @Green Thunder also gets enough on his truck between oil changes that it can't hurt to put on on the NA trucks.

    Too many mods to come
Pcv side definitely will catch so far on the crank case side nothing.

Does a cc can catch more if supercharged?

While they may catch a bit, I don’t think they’re necessary. Is there any evidence that the ultra high-mileage 3UR-FEs ran catch cans?

I am running two stock 5.7s. Neither engine consumes any oil (45k and 158k). The engine in my LX had milkshake under the cap pretty bad the first time I changed the oil (I bought it with 149k miles). I freaked out. Thought I had coolant in the oil or something. Turns out my PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) valve was seized. I bought a new one for $6, and it took 30 seconds to swap. Oil cap has been clean as a whistle ever since, even after short trips without fully warming up.

Just seems like one more peace of mind thing that we spend money on when we don’t really need to. Still, I know they do catch some stuff, and people say it’s different if you’re SC’d. I understand that. And granted, I haven’t inspected the top end of my engines, but the 3UR-FE is designed to take care of itself in this regard. This comes up in the 200 series section on Mud quite a bit; the consensus among Mudders is they aren’t needed.

This was my can after 4,000 miles. IMG_3649.jpg Basically full; so I’ve dropped my cycle to 3,500 miles. I just emptied it a few weeks ago at about 3,300 miles and it was getting full but still had a gap to where the threads start.

I’ve saved every “harvest” so far in an old half-gallon beer growler. This is after 14,xxx miles IMG_3650.jpg

In theory yes as the added boost will bump cylinder pressures and increase bypass pressure into the crankcase.

I 100% agree they are not needed. The longevity of these motors as built from the factory proves it. It is just a fun mod.

I collect mine too and @snivilous harassed me for it. Then the term “ass fluid” was coined and it is now my prefer nomenclature. Here’s my current collection of said “ass fluid.” I get far less than a lot of you guys though it seems.

I def can agree with this a little bit actually, I am super charged and I never have anything in there to empty but I also never mash the gas and I am very conservative driving and I'm sure it helps, but it is on there for piece of mind !

Where I live saying you “have a special container for collecting ass fluid to add to your collection” means something completely different.

I agree, but the air is thin at the elevation @snivilous lives at so I’ll grant him an exemption.

300k miles on my previous 5.7L and I’d never heard of these things. So yeah, while I do catch stuff in mine it never caused an issue in my previous truck

Someone else called it “smeg” earlier and I nearly spit out my coffee when I read that. It seemed to be the most accurate (in my mind) comparison I had heard yet.

Although not a mod, technically the same can be said for aftermarket air filters, oil filters, engine oil, gear oil, etc. Not necessarily needed for the vast majority of folks. Depends on use. I have a direct injection VQ motor so the catch can add is warranted. The catch can is kinda kuul too.

I understand the need/desire for a catch can with a direct injection engine (diesels are a good example as are some earlier generations of Eco-boost Ford engines) but our 5.7 liter engines are port injection engines as far as I know.

Carbonized oil deposits on the backside of intake valves don't occur in port injection engines because the valves are 'washed' by incoming fuel on each intake stroke. Seems as if this is a solution in search of a problem with the 3UR-FE 5.7 engine, especially in light of its known longevity without catch cans.
