I am torn between LED and HID for driving lights. Since i am unknown i thought i would post up my research and comparison here and look for recommendations from others.

This thread is for driving lights not fog lights. Fog lights will differ as it serves a different function.

    Fog light bulb size:
    2000 - 2006 Tundra= 9006
    2007 - 2013 Tundra= 9145 or H10
    2014+ Tundra = H16

The options below are for the 2007 - 2013 Tundra bulb size = H10

Tough choice. Either way is good. I am always looking for the best bang for the buck and both of these options definitely meet that criteria. Both easy to install. :notsure:

HID's include a ballast where the LEDs would be direct plug in. I can make it work though.

If u want bright, then go hid. Can't beat them yet with today's technology. Realize the longevity can be iffy depended on manufacturer....

Leds just aren't there yet in technology advancements for automotive lighting uses yet. This obviously excluded light bars. I'm saying bulb replacements.... not bright, unreliable, etc...

I stuck with halogen yellow bulbs for my fogs(I love yellow fogs with hids in the headlights)
Could've gone hid but I stayed cheap for now.

Hmm, yea i have read alot of reviews saying that the LED replacement bulbs aren't bright enough. Worse than stock bulbs.

If you can get led bulbs from bosch is one of the top led supplier for headlights/fogs in the world. Honda and audi use them in there higher end cars.

As for hid go with 5000k bulb. Go with TRS dont go on ebay for the china ballast, that they do have noise problems. I learned first hand on that.

Edit also hella is in this game I forgot about them.

Hondas have high end cars???? Lol

I second the trs. But he already had ddm in the headlights. Trs would be total opposite in the fogs? As for Kelvin temp, totally up to him what color he wants. I have 5k in my headlights, nice and white. No blue.

I'm still iffy on the hids. Have a set of rigid in my sxs and they always seem to act up at times. I have a set of 4" round LEDs that I'm probably gonna swap them out with. That said I would probably go LEDs.

The technology is changing very quickly in both hid and led. Leds just like hids can burn out. Best ballast on the market are denso(toyota) ballast right on there tail is Matsushita(nissan) ballast. Both are very reliable and proven.

As for the leds manufacturing process are different from company to company that makes leds tough to judge.. I love my truck lite leds(made in the usa) in my tacoma yes I paid out of my ass for them two years ago 400 bucks but I wouldnt go back to old style again. Nice light output but my fx-r (hid) on my tundra blow them away in light and performance and most of all intensity.

In conclusion, leds have came along ways along with hids. Both have there down falls. Main thing is application is begin used. Leds dont like alot of excessive heat off or on. Hids the gas can leak or fade ( or salts in the bulbs go bad not vaporized when they should). It more like choose your poison in this hid/led world.

Csuviper, I would match your hids in your projectors. I have hids in my low beams and fogs. They are super bright, 6k. I haven't been flashed. DDM in my low beams and Hid Extra in my fogs.

Good question Brian. Do you spend the $30 on theses or just save for a set of cubes and get the rigid mount so the cubes fit.?? These may get you what your looking for but it's a maybe.... The other way is gonna be a bit more but is gonna no doubt give you what you want. I'm having the same debate right now. Lol

Just so you know and not make the mistake that I just made. The bulbs for 2014 and up tundras are H16 but toyota changed the fitting which is actually an H11. Headlight revolution has a youtube video on it.
I just bought these but couldn't see how they are because wrong fitting but will be sending back for the correct ones. http://m.ebay.com/itm/262138188783

I'm not a big fan of single LED bulb replacements. They just don't seem to project as well as HIDs, and believe me, I've tried a bunch of them. On the other hand, some of the multi-bulb off-road lights are great.

Not willing to spend $250 on fog lights though. Thinking $100 max.

I've read yellow light is the best way to cut thru rain and snow. Know anything about that?

I think the better question to ask, is what will look good with or match your main light setup.

Are your running lights led? If so, I bet yellow led fog lights would look great.

I have HID 6000k headlights. Have not changed the DRLS yet.
Not really using the fog lights for fog but more for extra light while driving at night and also helps out alot during snow storms to see the road. Without the low light i wouldn't be able to see in bad storms.

Brian I believe I have a pic of my hids somewhere on here, I have 6000 k in my low beams and fogs. e9f8530b10ca620ee1196b7ccc003c22_b9746af7ae2aa93430e1f08d8bcf9ccac5e4276b.jpg5daab9f30605f4e301ebf4efc2f51bbc_7da40e889ffe16dbd4af4384b39d63e7128a9ac5.jpg
$120 investment for both. Works for me until I can afford the set-up I want, anyway hope this helps

Just can't decide which probably means I need to wait and get funding for something that is known to be good.

As you know I am old school. (Not when it comes to my work. Totally opposite.) My Tundra didn't have factory fogs. Most factory fogs, including Toyota's leave a lot to be desired. Was never, ever about how bright. It's more about the lens color/defraction and how that lens/light combo will truly cut thru the fog most effectively. Most new truck factory fogs lens are clear and too bright, which is not near as good as yellow/amber (I know, not cool now) and are really crappy when it comes to cutting thru heavy fog. That is why I bought my yellow rectangular lens PIAA's with traditional 50W bulb. Fog lights work best at low speeds which make sense. Who is going to haul ass thru heavy fog? Want to hit a zombie :homer: by accident, or worse, a 1600 lb moose? That's what true fog lights are designed for. To cut thru the fog. You should not be traveling at a high rate of speed under heavy fog condition anyways. What's known to be best is a yellow/amber bulb and/or yellow/amber lens that will produce a wide, bar-shaped beam (not round like OEM) with a sharp horizontal cutoff "that actually cuts thru the fog". Cibie used to make the best fogs back in the 70's. I lived in western Oregon for 13 years and I am pretty sure I know what heavy fog is. I was fortunate to find my un-cool, discontinued, new in box, yellow lens PIAA's on Craig's List for $50. $200 retail when still available. Pretty sure the big three went back to rectangular fogs, although with clear lens.
I'm not about what looks best. I'm about what works best. The PIAAs actually cut thru the fog like the old school Cibies. I will see these guys before you: upload_2015-12-15_20-16-31.jpg

Looks good, very good for sure , but will your fog lights actually cut thru the fog? I'm waiting to see some pics from someone who actually uses their fogs to cut thru fog with these bright /high lumen set ups.

Thanks for the insite Matt. The thing is that there just isn't much fog in Colorado. Really just want nice bright driving lights I guess an not pay an arm and a leg.

Thanks Mat, as far as cutting through fog.....I don't think it's as good as the ambers, but as far as brightness These are spot on. That's what I was trying to say to Brian. I travel some very dark patches of road and they help tremendously. :D

I did see some fog once since I've been here in CO (2004):homer: I understand what you want to do , it does look good and I like to save money too. I just get stuck on the term "fog" lights. Lets call them driving/fog lights so I feel better. heh heh.

I used to have HID in my last pickup which I loved especially here in North Dakota with the snow blowing across the roads. With the HID they would almost like tint the snow a little darker but the lines on the roads would really reflect and easy to see.

image.jpg I just installed my LED headlights and fog lights from headlight revolution. I used the level 2 dogs and Gen 2 headlights.

They are wayyyy brighter than the factory lights. I ordered the color shields also but didn't use them. It's putting out the 5000k color without the shields. I love the color and power.

I also did the full interior/ level 2 reverse/ third brake/ cab and license plate. They are bad ass and I'm happy with them so far.
