1st Gen. Lunch Table - General Discussion

I'm assuming that one was intended for street-only, road queens, if the manufacturer claims it's a "STREET SERIES" prominently in their description.

I actually take my truck out in the boonies for hiking, fishing, camping. It's a complete vanity purchase to a degree though. New wheels aren't going to give any performance boost, any realistic gain on the trails I'm running on, but whatever.

 

What size tires are you gonna run?

Bet that it'll be close to stock. As in no cutting nothing.

 

I was looking for a commuter car and gave up on Camry's and Corolla's because the price people wanted for them was too much. I was looking at avalons and then found a lexus ES330 for less than that. Oddly enough, at least in Denver, the ES330 and ES350 sell for less than Toyotas.

Total grandpa car, but maybe worth a look.

 

Nope, wasn't kidding. I mean, the only purpose it saves is keeping your lips safe(r), and giving a 'visual inch' if it's the same color as the tire. If any.

Curious to hear your opinion, and @assassin10000's input too.

I'm debating between 275/70r17, 275/75r17, or 285/70r17. Not sure I want to lug the extra weight that half inch 285 will add. And with the visual inch the faux beadlock gives.

Brand-wise, still going back and forth between Nitto Ridge Grapplers, Toyo AT2 and AT3. I keep catching myself doing a double-take, like, "Oooh, what tire is that?" only to see it's the Nitto RGs. The Toyos seem universally loved though, and seem better on noise with a tamer profile.

If math is right, 17x9 w/-12 offset should put me @ ~4.5 BS if my math is right, so if this info is correct and my OEM 5-way splits are 17x7.5 and +18 that's 5" BS, I should be pushed out a little farther, and hopefully free and clear of rubbing suspension and maybe frame with the 285s (edit: Nope, with 9" wide rim at 4.5" backspace on an aggressive 275, I rubbed. Lesson learned: under 4.6 backspace is not conducive for a rim wider than 8.5" at 275 or 285 "typical" tire sizes for our truck). I think @alb1k was saying the DC sweet spot is around 4.75 BS, but AC seem to have less issue with clearance.

I still need to get my COs & UCA etc. installed, though. Got the easy stuff done out back, but haven't had the few hours on a weekend to tackle the rest.

How much lift are planning for up front? Think I remember you saying less than 2"? I wouldn't recommend 285's. 275's will save some weight and have less footprint, giving you slightly better mileage and feel. I think 275/70's(32.2x10.8) will look perfect if you stick to a small lift. The 275/75's and 285's will rub and require some cutting. They'll look great but will most likely give you some headaches.

I had Toyo at's on my old Titan, wore great and easily could've lasted 50k. The new at3's look sweet imo. And just saw they have a 35x11.5r17, wish i knew that 6 months ago! You can get the at3's in a P265/70r17 or P285/70r17. The 275's are only LT's.
My old boss had 2 sets of RG's while i worked for him. They get loud and shudder towards the end of their life.

 

Roxbury has been primarily gentrified but Nubian square (Dudley square) is still downtrodden.

We also have the methadone mile although I wouldn’t exactly brag about that. Build a methadone clinic and they will come, so it is said.

The Combat Zone on the edge of Chinatown is all but gone as well, so some good news.

Not too many people can afford to live in Boston nowadays.

 

The coilovers supposedly support 2"-3", I don't think they'll wind down lower than 2". Guess I'll basically land somewhere in the 2"-2.5" range up front. I'm anticipating having to toss at least 1" out back to even things up and may have the truck squatting for a few days while I wait for parts if that's the case.

Dude on my street is a T4R nut with a 1GT DC running 275/70r17 with my same 5-spoke split stockers. They stuffed fine on my truck w/o any lift. Lock to lock, forward or reverse, zero rub on stock suspension. Has me contemplating 285s.

I've been using @FirstGenVol and @EvilMilkshake as reference material knowing they're both AC owners, and DC/AC have some geometry differences. Both guys are running 285/70r17 on SCS Ray10, either -10 or -12 offset, I forget (I think SCS is spec'd -10, so 4.35ish BS?) here's FGV's (link), and EM' (link) setup. EM has no spacers, I don't remember if FGV is running spacers up front or not.

It looks like 275/70r17 and 275/75r17 have a max reco'd wheel width 17x8.5? No issues w/stretch to cover that 0.5"? I think 235/85r17 would look like a damn pizza cutter. It's wild how much more massive side-by-side the 285 looks than the lower width/aspect yet only 0.3"gain (edit: 0.6" total, I guess)

 

If you’ll be at 2-2.5”, I’d look into a P rated 285.

 

Oil has skyrocketed in my area. I used to get 6qts of Mobil 1 advanced full from BJs for sub $30. It’s now $45+ And wal mart isn’t any cheaper

Now compare to 285/75r17 and 295/75r16 to your previous measurements for some seriously beefy 33's

 

Your 295’s are 33’s, my 285/75’s are 34’s

Yours is . 4" longer but mines .4" wider. What ever butters yo bread better

 

I've got an 08 ES350. It's treated me well the last 5 years. Other than the alternator smoke show a while back.

I just can't stand the look of the ES330 so I didn't even consider it.

Final boat update-

It ran great! We all had a great time.

I was super happy with how well it ran for not running in 14 years, especially since I didn’t do anything at all to the carbs, pumps, lines, etc. Only got it up to 35mph or so, I’m still not terribly comfortable with it. Plus it was really cold. Still have some work to do, but so far it’s really good.

I’ve attached some half decent photos I took with my phone, but I have two rolls of film that will be developed and scanned in a week or two.

 

Wait, that’s not entirely true. I’m so tired that I completely forgot about this.

One of the seals on the gearcase is gone. Maybe multiple. When I pulled the boat out of the water, I checked the oil in the lower unit and it was super super milky. There’s definitely lots of water getting into the oil and gears down there, which is not good news.

Re-sealing a lower unit on an outboard is not a simple or easy task, and it often requires specialized tools as well. I’m hoping that I’ll be able to replace a single seal instead of tearing the whole thing apart, but we’ll see.

 

That sounds like something kinda big to over look! The rose colored glasses were in full effect. Hopefully that seal doesn't eat your lunch.
