Hey, everyone Im very new to the Toyota world. Coming over from the German side as an Audi employee

My grandpa recently gave me this truck after he bought it 9 years ago with 235k on the clock, It has 245k now and for being an MN car its entire life it is in fantastic condition. After driving it for a month I have fallen in love with it and plan on dailying it to save miles on my S4. I took it as a good sign when I was inspecting the truck at the shop, a few techs offered to buy the truck, it cracked me up that the Audi techs wanted a 20+ year old Toyota.

I hope you enjoy the pics and don't hate my wheel choice to much(the stocks were pretty thrashed)

A first gen Tundra that was owned by Grandpa is one of the best purchases that you can make. Did Gramps take care of that frame and do rust prevention since they're up north? That's one of the main things I'd be worried about given the location.

Looks like a nice truck from the pics, welcome aboard! :)

My Dad gave me his 2006 Tundra in a similar fashion. Been a great use to me and I have put 60k on it since then. Fantastic vehicles! Great decision to keep it.

    Cool grandpa... nice truck!

Don't forget to fill out your profile with the year, model (yours is an Access Cab = AC), 2WD/4WD, and trim level. Helps a lot in the future when you're asking questions.

    Welcome!

10k miles in 9 years? That's either a lot of short trips or a lot of sitting. Check under the oil cap for build up and watch for leaks. How are the various hoses?

Also, got any pics of that S4?

Get some 303 protectant on those seats and some rubber all weather floor mats and that truck is aces assuming nothing needs replacing under the hood.

Welcome! Yep, you will continue to fall in love with the FGT. Especially when you compare the cost of maintenance vs. the Auto Union. Congrats!

Congratulations on the truck it's a good one!

Definitely read the new owners thread @shifty` mentioned.

Also check the timing belt! Look under the cover to check it's condition (I am learning this the hard way)! It's mentioned in the new owners thread. If you have record of when it was changed that's great! If not then maybe it was changed before your grandpa acquired the truck and you're approaching the time interval for it.

Even if you have records indicating it was changed, check it! It's only a couple 10mm bolts for you to be able to pull back either timing cover and look at the belt condition.

We had one member on here post pics of their belt with only 20k miles on it recently, and it was cracked about 10 times per inch, looked like it'd fail any minute.

@shifty` thank you for all the info. I’ll check the timing belt shortly, the truck was very well maintained engine and transmission wise but I have no records of a timing belt change.

when I first got the truck I put it on a lift and inspected the frame simply because it’s a MN truck. and I thought it was in great condition for how old it was. But I wasn’t aware at the time that the frame was a big deal for these trucks specifically. I’ll put it back up and take some pics.

I remember a few spots laminating, but there were no holes and over all seemed mostly like surface rust.

bonus pic of the S4 for those who asked

Very nice. I was looking for a B6/B7 S4, but most that age are around the danger zone in miles.

    Nice!

You have quite a few of us on here who are VAG allies. I almost went Audi, but stuck in the VW wheelhouse. I've posted a few pics of my 99.5 GTI quite a few times on here, I think this reply has the most pics.

True story! If a poor quality belt is used (one in mine was gates not great on the timing) or if there is a leak in the water pump that could degrade it or a number of other things. Look at the belt to avoid potential catastrophic issues.

I see you are in Bloomington like me. Keep the truck out of the winter at all costs! My frame had a ton of surface rust but we were able to save the frame and now keep it parked all winter in the garage. Hope to see it around town:)
