Yup. It’s been mentioned quite a bit and may even be in PHM’s build thread? Some replace the bushing all together, some silicone it

 

I think PMH was the silicone job. This thing is flopping around enough to bang a bit. I’m gonna replace

 

Are you talking about the joint, or the seal? Several of us replaced that steering shaft seal. There is a stickied thread about it.

The seal was only around $15 when I bought it a few years ago. It really helped cut down on engine noise inside the cab. Can't speak to that joint.

 

The rubber boot attached to the intermediate shaft? Those get torn all the time with age and let the mad 'ticking' sound of the valves annoy you. You'd think it's an exhaust leak but it is not thankfully.

Unless I misunderstood your question. I jammed $5 of pink insulation in there to quiet it down. Works great for me.

 

no, you guys are right, but the shaft is banging around in there. I’m trying to pull it to inspect the u joints and stuff. I’ll get the seal for sure, now just looking to see why the play.

 

I remember seeing one person on here whose shaft was all kinds of whacked out. I asked about it, but can't remember whether they responded back or not. Surely all the weight and pressure can't be resting on that one seal?!

@Treeclimber mentioned something about "3 of 4 bolts were out" so there certainly must be some bolts and a u-clamp or something to hold the shaft in place? Or maybe he just means to the pressed plate bolted to the firewall. It would be a massive safety failure if all the weight of steering rested on one bushing.

 

Yeah - mine looks way better than that and all 4 flange bolts were good and snug. But my shaft is favoring the seal side his does, and i can wiggle it and bang it around. maybe the seal has enough hold to steady it and play is normal. Not sure, but since I'm gonna replace that seal ill pull it out and check the joints.

 

His seal is almost completely gone in the middle if you look close.

Weird. I'd be shocked if they put everything on a rubber seal, but maybe they did. I guess I should probably go out to mine and give it a good shove-around. But I'm worried I'll just end up ripping my seal

 

Here is what my old one looked like. I had a hell of a time getting the steering wheel straight after doing this job. There are splines on the shaft and if you are off even the slightest it will be obvious with your steering wheel.

 

That's another part you may want to consider buying before Toyota decides to discontinue it. At $15 I'm glad I replaced mine. That rubber can't last forever.

 

No that seal is just to keep crap out of the cab and to limit the noise passing through. It’s not thick enough to hold the shaft center. That should be the steering rack itself that limits movement I would think. (Either that or the upper steering column itself)

 

I'll hafta add a couple to the list on my next order. Small price to pay for insurance.

That seal’s shot on mine and mice have come in there, put a trail cam on the floor and caught them in the act- another good reason to seal it up.

 

Damn. I hope they’re not attracted to fiberglass as a nest. Not good for me.

 

I missed the shop vac talk, but I've gotta throw a +1 for the Ridgid 4gal 5hp unit. It was the only powerful vac I could find that wasn't huge, which was exactly what I was after. The amount of available accessories is also a bonus. For anyone that owns one, I recommend adding the outer filter. Clicks into the blower port, cuts down on dust that makes it past the main filter, and also quiets down the machine significantly, which is why I bought it. Cost is around $15

I was looking at the kits you can get with it. I'll get off my ass and order one. It just sucks having to get rid of all the accessories and stuff, so I'm hoping all my 18yo Ridgid parts will work with the new vac so I'll have a good 20' or so of hoses, 6ft of extensions, and other crap.

 

I've always wondered about something. If you're using a shop vac for something wet, are you supposed to remove the filter first? I assume the paper filter would get ruined by water. I've never used mine for liquids.Now you guys have me wanting to buy a Ridgid.
