There was a recall for Lexus on faulty valve springs but it was rare. They never issued a recall for Toyota 5.7 but I’ve seen it happen a few times here over the years. IIRC though, these failures were happening after several years and around 100k miles, not in the first year of service.

Was this title sarcastic or do you really still love your broken down new tundra that cost you 10k out of your pocket?...just curious if you meant it. I have been trying to decide on a new truck and had the tundra in the mix of choices.

Let’s be real. You can find engine failures on any of the most reliable engines, especially those that have been in production for 14 model years. It’s a mechanical machine, there is an entire industry built around them breaking. It’s the trends based on age and mileage from which you can surmise what’s most likely to be reliable. I had seen a post from a Ford page than a 2019 5.0 owner was #439 or something ridiculous in line for a new engine under warranty and it would be a long wait, so it could be worse.

All the OEM forums are filled with failures. Hard to judge relative quality by the forums. A few really unhappy owners make it a full time job to post their issues far and wide. Satisfied owners not so much

Yeah I’ve read all or most of those. I know the 5.7 has had a very very very rare failure or two. Last link is result of owner repair error.

What I’m asking for are links that show the 2nd gen’s debut was as rocky as the 3rd. That it was a stinker that wasn’t generally well received. Because my recollection is that it blew everyone else way, debuted way out in front of the pack, and kicked the domestic manufacturers into high gear because the only thing they really have is their trucks.

There has been way more than two. There’s two just at my dealership alone. I called my salesman in Florida. Including mine he knows of 4 more. Do math for all around the U.S. I bet there are a couple hundred.

I do still love the truck. I think I’m leaning towards a 21 Tundra or a GMC with the 6.2 Liter. I’ll stay back until they get this turbo stuff figured out.

I highly doubt those numbers... but if it makes you feel better to think that, then fine. Hope you get this worked out to your satisfaction one way or another. I have had this happen before and it did suck. But I took the rebuild, which I then drove for 5 more years and 75,000 more miles, then sold for real market value... i.e. no diminished value or other such nonsense. If anything, that engine was younger than the rest of the vehicle. And that was a Chevy.

Courtesy Toyota of Brandon in Tampa is where I bought mine. Chris Garcia Cruz was my salesman. Humble, Tx Tejas Toyota is where the two are located. Both with knocking engines. Why would I make it up?

Not saying you made anything up. But hearsay and unscientific extrapolation does not necessarily confirm your conclusion of hundreds of failures. But good luck to you.

curious to know what your oil change intervals are? Toyota recommendation of 10,000 miles on a turbo engine makes me really skeptical. my truck (company lease) is only at 11,000 and i am getting the inclination to do oil and filter at 5,000 miles to prevent this kind of thing from happening. but my limited knowledge about engine lubrication and bearing relationship is open to more experience perspectives.

Even a 10K OCI shouldn’t prematurely kill main bearings in under 50K miles.

Something else is going on here. Probably the simplest explanation is a batch of main bearings that are bad.

Oh. I thought the buyback price is $10k less because of milage. Or are they still charging the $10k for milage. Regardless, sucks to have such an expensive truck and have this happen.

An equal amount of “my 5.7 broke a lifter spring” complaints out there. Things happen. Let’s see if a pattern forms or not. It’s 2 or 3 5.7’s that have had the broken lifter spring cause engine failure in 16 years worth of trucks. It’s 2 or 3 we’ve heard about in less than 2 years for the 3.4. Not a lot, but too many early on without an explanation as to why. Cheap steel explains the spring failures.

Also the only problem I see here as far as problems early on is that a lot of people asked about the reliability of the V6TT. And everyone jumped and said its been in use in the Lexus for x amount of years. So what changed? So if the V6TT has been around for x amount then its not an early on issue. Either its a freak of nature or Toyota changed something.

Two main changes: it's now tasked with truck duties, and it's built/assembled here instead of in Japan.

For example, the turbos for the Tundra and Sequoia V35A-FTS are built by IHI America under license from IHI Japan. IHI Japan supplies the turbos for the LC300/LX600, and there are zero wastegate issues to be found on the Mud forum regarding those vehicles.

Agreed, mostly. Regarding the 3UR-FE, the Japanese ones seem to have issues the American ones don't, and vice versa. I started a thread on what I have been noticing as an owner of an American made Tundra and a Japanese made LX570. Here's a link, but the short of it is, it seems the American vehicles have fewer/rarer common issues. Not all of the issues are in the motor, though.

Being DOHC, I would be surprised to find lifters in a 5.7.

Believe it’s “cam followers” in OHC engines.
