I think this is a fair point especially in context of what Saint Holdener is saying in the video you linked. Likely not done that way since the hot side piping is already occupying that space to route to the a2a intercooler.

I have been wondering about this since they first posted a picture of their turbo kit under the hood months ago. That doesn't make much sense to me to have a hot air intake. It's also a prime spot for water ingestion.

Just monitor at the moment. See what happens. Then go from there. More than likely you’ll be fine. But as the saying goes, with great boost comes great monitoring.

Whatever this forum told me to do
Hold on a second…bare with me here.

Why would a turbo application produce more heat/stress than a PD blower?

I would think (yes, me thinking is dangerous) the turbo would produce less overall heat and stress.

I’m guessing this application, at 5psi, will produce similar HP to a PD blower @ 8 psi.

I would also surmise a PD blower would produce more internal heat* & the turbo produce external heat – or is this what we are contemplating here?

For the record – I am a fan of the stock Toyota CAI system & this turbo app should utilize it.

*engine has to parasitically turn the blower

Turbos use the engines oiling system for lubrication which adds heat to the oil which adds heat to the engine. PD blowers don’t. Again, just monitor it for now as I don’t think 3-4psi is going to add much but it’s just a part of life with boosted vehicles.

Please note that the Stage 1 is probably off the truck already or soon will be. The final stages of this will be a Stage 2 and has been since the beginning. One to show how easy it is to go to the Stage 2 and (2). because it is twice as cool as the 1!!:)

I understand the basics of the Turbo charged vehicle but this is a first for me and new for the Tundra kind of at least around here.

The intake where the filter is I am going to suggest that it is piped down and come out under the bumper with a wide oval opening. Then screen said opening. Doing something like that will give fresh ambient air coming into the turbo and being that there will be a steep up turn it will prevent any water coming in. I think a wide oval opening underneath will not hamper anything as this is not an off-road vehicle. I saw this application in a Camaro but it was plumbed into the bumper,,, our bumper has to much going on in there for that to work therefore my idea is to put it under.????

I will ask the crew if they could do this or if it is even necessary. Jesse has had this same system on his truck for years now and has not been gentle with it and has not had any troubles/issues. Plus it is a high mileage Tundra. Like I said this has been addressed (Heat) at the beginning of this run.

I just saw part of a video and I am disappointed. But I do not have the facts. Let me say this differently. I saw a picture of the truck at the dyno, I can not open it to run the video. I do not have the facts yet nor know anything that took place during the video.
But I saw a picture of the hood open and fans in front of the truck.

I am hoping that this was for the wastegate dump run but we shall see.

Yes yes I know this but the hood is not open when I drive.

Most videos I have seen explain this and their explanations are that the hood should be shut. Opinions vary???:)

Has pricing been revealed yet? I read through this entire thread and I do not recall seeing the price for a Stage 2 kit for a 2018 Tundra

It's perfectly normal for testing purposes. Even with fans blowing on the front end and the hood open, it's less air flow than what you see driving down the street.

So the fans were on a run or two and fans off for a run or two because of low temps

Well then there should be no worries then on that part. The shop was 25 degrees yesterday morning so they had to warm everything up

For the stage 2, there will be a full intercooler, piping, BOV, injectors and fuel pump upgrade, shooting for 7-8 PSI. Also, since we already have the water meth installed, that will stay, but we will turn it off and on in subsequent DYNO test to make sure we get all of the data we can for everyone.

I'll get the videos and charts uploaded hopefully today. Thanks again for the amazing support!

MAF Sensor sample tube size, anything smaller and we ride the top of the 5v line, maxing out the MAF scale in the software.

I guess it depends what heat you’re referring to, intake air heat? The heat difference between the air discharged off the turbo vs supercharger w/ same boost level into the intake valves is likely not huge if I had to guess but turbos should have an edge there.

The difference is probably more how it is handled. Sucking 150 degree engine bay air into the turbo inlet means the stage 1 without an intercooler is discharging some pretty hot air under sustained boost, which is why they’re using water/meth injection to help with that. Like in the Holdener video, even on an intercooled setup if the IAT is super high from sucking in hot engine bay air, the intercooler is using all of its capacity just to shed that unnecessary heat that was added into the intake air from the engine bay. You’re often going to see dyno runs of turbo vehicles with the hood open and a filter on the turbo inlet wherever it is mounted as it’s going to give the best dyno numbers that way. It can suck all the cool ambient air it wants from the room with the hood open.

A supercharger with a “hot air intake” not running an intercooler wouldn’t be any good either for the same reasons. In regards to parasitic losses, the tvs2650 for example requires between 30-40hp to spin around 11k rpm and make 9-10psi at redline on our application, according to their literature. Turbos aren’t a free lunch either and also consume some horsepower in the restriction of the exhaust gas through the hot side turbine, on average it’s just less with turbos.

In regard to pricing questions, we still have some final pieces to the process to get you all the total price, but our plan is to be VERY competitive on a HP per $$$ scale with what else is available, if not under! It's NOT going to be a $20,000 kit, if that is what you are all worried about...

The wastegate dump run was 425 and 483 for the torque at 4PSI. Waiting for the Stage 2 which should be a blast!:)

Ok, here are the videos of the DYNOs from yesterday. This is our Stage 1 Kit, other than the hot side of the turbo, the straight shot coupler, water meth and TRD Exhaust, this truck is completely stock. Tuning was done with HP Tuners.

409 Wheel HP / 480 Wheel Torque at 3.5 PSI on a 76mm Turbo, This is with the wastegate recirculated back into the exhaust.

425 WHP / 485 WTQ Open Wastegate Dump Test

09B7C419-448A-43A3-A3C2-7BC5C66EDA38.jpg This is the Camaro that gave me the idea to put a cold air scope under or on the bumper. This is his wastegate dump if I remember correctly. Anywhos I found out it really wasn’t necessary so I will let the guy that knows turbos handle things like he has been. Yay for Stage 2 :)

I think you'll be fine. And and if anything, that hood I linked would probably solve any temperature issues that would arise. Plus it'd look badass!

I thought I read they were really heavy. Not sure what that means as far as real numbers but I was just told all fiberglass is heavy

No, I'm supercharged! Getting tuned tomorrow!

Also no that hood should be roughly the same weight as stock, but I haven't looked into them in depth on the Tundras. You can get them in carbon fiber, which would be lighter and stiffer. I've had a vented carbon fiber hood for my M3 on backorder for 13 months now though!
