Has anyone ever installed a power tailgate lock kit on their 2.5 gen tundra? Looking to put one in my 17 SR5 and was wondering if they are worth it, and if they are easy to install. I've found a couple online through Amazon, and 4 wheel parts for like $140.

I did the OEM one. Plug and play is best. Pretty easy install, and yes very worth it. It should have come with this from the factory.

    Too many, but not enough....
Mine came installed already from dealer and it's totally worth it. Very convenient.

I installed a pop and lock on my 2016 and it is awesome and definitely recommend it! Did have to bend the actuator a bit to get it to work 100%, but after that have not had an issue for over 3 years.

Yeah- they are great. I have the Pop n’ Lock. Very convenient. A bit loud, but I don’t mind.

My brother in law had a Toyota branded one, and it was a nicer kit and was much quieter. If those traits sound important, spend the few extra bucks.

Man I wallpapered the inside my tailgate around the P&L and it still sounds like an angry metal frog trying to escape.

(of the many minor annoyances in life this is admittedly whiny and babyish. The clunk is fine)

For those of you saying you used the OEM one, can that work for a 2017? I bought a pop n lock, but havent installed it yet due to not wanting to hack into the wiring.

My 2nd mod to my truck when I bought it new. It should have came with the OEM but Toyota have some bean counters. My original pop n lock actuator is dying (it couldn't unlock consistently anymore even after cleaning the mechanism) and replaced it with newer version HD actuator. It is quitter since it is fully incased. Not sure if it is stronger or last longer, I shall see but worth the upgrade to me. I just had to buy longer flanged bolt, M6-1.0 x 20mm long, original is only 10mm long. BTW, 1st mod is to put Toyota tow hitch receiver cover, lol.

So do the OEM units tie into the existing actuators? As in Lock/Unlock with key fob & auto lock when you put in gear, unlock in park?
Or is it a separate switch?

There is no existing actuator in mine, but it does tie into lock/unlock function electrically. So when you hit lock or unlock in your fob, it locks or unlock the t/g.

I have a 2018 and am sure it will work for your '17. Installed the OEM and the wires are already spliced into a plug so you just unplug it, plug in the harness and plug original into that. No hacking into wiring needed. So easy and worth the money. It even comes with another grommet with a hole to replace the one in the floor. Like stated above, make sure you got the right length(depending on your bed size).

    Get this one..
It includes the replacement grommets for the body and tailgate that make room for the added lock wiring with the camera wiring.
I have the first Gen Pop n Lock on my 2014.
A bit more basic, the newer ones (as posted) encase everything in plastic.

Just run your wiring, and ziptie it, to the existing wiring loom.

It is well worth it to know your tailgate is locked when the doors are locked.
Along with rampant cat theft, tailgate thefts are a problem in Dallas..

    Not sure at this point.
Real easy install if you pick up pop and lock (model PL8547TUN). I just installed mine the other day.

    Remove negative from battery.

All you need to do is install actuator in tail gate. Then fish Delphi connector from actuator to beginning of bed - zip tie and use the clips provided for the extra wire now going out of tail gate into bed.

Start feeding the main wire harness from front of vehicle to rear, while loosely connecting zip ties to main wire harness.

Open up kick panel on passenger side, install color coded connector to it, pull up carpet, pop out grommet and poke hole in to feed cable (make sure to seal the hole you poke after the wire has been fed through - I used RTV).

    Replace negative terminal to battery.

    Test lock/actuator.

Then zip tie the harness to main harness and cut excess ties.

Should be about an hour max to install and well worth it.

Installed oem version about two months ago. Worst part was getting the plastic trim that covers the wires back on in the passenger side footwell after hooking everything up. Those clips can be a little annoying

I recently did the OEM one on my 2020 CM and extremely happy with it. I seen one similar on Amazon for $80 after I had ordered and was installing it. No regrets though. It was extremely easy and all plug and play. I had installed the pop n lock one in my 2014 and it wasn’t as easy nor did it have any grommets and was a lot louder thank the OEM I just installed. The previous one didn’t have a plug and play harness either, had to order that separately back then. I think the new pop n lock kits might be PNP now.

Not enough, apparently...yet. This damn forum...
I have a slight problem…my truck had the branded PopnLock installed when I bought it; don’t know if previous owner installed or his selling dealer. Anyway, it quit working a while back even after cleaning. It seems to be getting power at the tailgate by test light. I bought a replacement kit and tested the actuator prior to install and no joy. However, I did test both actuators directly at the battery and both function. Any ideas on this?

I bought an actuator off Amazon for the lock and 2 more with a logic controller so that the tail gate opens with 4 unlock pushes on the remote.

I also ordered the OEM. for $150 out the door it's not horrible. This thread convinced me to buy it. Now it's just sitting in my garage waiting for me to find the free hour to actually install it.
