Looking at buying a 2017 base model ( 80,000 miles), compared to our 4runner and taco does the cost of taking care of the GX 460 for the long haul cost a lot more being a lexus?

Two different vehicles. The GX is the small V8 with fulltime 4WD. Your coming up on significant fluid changes, and the struts typically only last 100K miles and the springs will be worn as well as its a heavy vehicle. We loved our GX and had a 2014 we ordered and waited four months on from Japan. Sold it with 96K miles in fall of 2019 and wife wanted to downsize to an RX F Sport. Being a base model the struts and springs will be less expensive than the air ride rear suspension we had. I'm waiting to see the all new GX next year and debate whether to get into one again.

Vehicle was rock solid and did not have any warranty or out of warranty issues. pads and rotors are reasonable as the parts are not unique to Lexus. Fulltime 4WD has lots of fluids and MPG will lower with the drag on the drivetrain.

Nope, not at all. Its a prado underneath.

What will cost more is trim stuff if you damage it.
But nothing you can't find in the used market.

Bumpers etc., are more expensive, but then Ironman makes a good one which fits. Good luck finding lesser used stuff like rear bumpers at Tacoma/Tundra prices.
The engine is a gem though, and takes toyota parts.

Its very reliable too. Make sure you techstream the vehicle. Airbag related codes may not show up on standard OBD readers (though expensive readers will do it).
A common lexus problem is the knee airbag code which is due to the wire connector getting borked (happens on the RXs too).

If you are planning to build an overlanding rig, its a great platform, and the GXOR community is extremely passionate and helpful

Feel free to ask any questions. We had a GX 470 and then upgraded to GX 460 (and now moving to TRD Pro Tundra! hence we are here!)
