I wonder if putting the axles in the freezer would help slip them together with some that are tight but start like yours. With press fit axle bearings, we used to put the bearings in the toaster oven and the axles in the freezer. They would sometimes drop together with no hydraulic press necessary.

Sounds like you have a bigger freezer than I do... Seriously tho, that would likely be enough to shrink them to slide home free. Either that for pack on ice for a few hours and slide them in. We do a lot of press fit stuff at my work, bearing heaters, etc. I never felt the axle was going in too tight.

The guys saying they’re ‘a little tight’ aren’t referring to the issues I’ve seen across the country. The axles physically won’t go in. That’s the issue. This is not something to take lightly. I’ve seen 10 shops across the country have to tear down an assembled carrier section after dong the work of putting it together. All to install a stock carrier. Because companies send these out without the warning, test fit the axles first.

If this was towards me, that's not what I was saying. I've heard of the out of spec spline issues, hence why I test fit. Absolutely do a test fit first. Mine was snug but serviceable.

That a good tip, thanks for the heads up! I can’t stand when I tear down a brake job to find out I’ve got the wrong parts, I’d be beyond myself if it were a differential. Is this an issue you’ve come across with multiple brands of LSDs or any one brand in particular?

Absolutely, the more info we can get out the better. Now, who's had this happen recently and is there a manufacture date or lot code to look out for?

Unfortunately, it happened first in 2020. The problem hasn’t been officially acknowledged or corrected to my knowledge. Until I stop hearing of it happening, everybody needs to check their axle figment before continuing with the set up.

One of the members here had it happen with both the powertrax and the speedmaster, he bought both in case there was an issue and then neither fit. It almost makes me wonder if there is some amount of inconsistency in the axle splines themselves that contributes to the issue.

Also, I’ve had both the auburn pro and the powertrax and can definitely say I prefer the operation of the powertrax.

I’d be EXTREMELY surprised if there were inconsistencies in Toyotas mass production manufacturing. Especially considering the axles are coming out of drivable trucks.

As would I, it’s just interesting this issue happens across 3 different brands. I’m more implying perhaps it’s relative to how worn the axle splines are. Maybe the axles they used for reference when they made their original design for the differentials had some decent mileage on them. Is this issue possibly happening more often on low mileage trucks with less worn splines?

    I wouldn’t. Manufacturing tolerances are a thing.

And since the world stopped and things have been coming back online at break neck paces, qc has taken a back seat. I’ve seen failures and quirks in my industry that were never a thing until after covid. Companies are scrambling to get their hands on whatever they can get to keep product going out the door. Doesn’t explain any axle built prior to 2020 but it explains diffs built after 2020.

It’s not the truck. The problem just started happening and the year truck doesn’t matter. It’s the carriers.
