I have a 2012 Tundra 5.7 Platinum 2x2 that will not go into drive. It will go into reverse and neutral though.

Backstory: I recently replaced both catalytic converters and everything was running good. Yesterday I pressure washed the engine while it continued to run. Once I was done I decided to drive around the block to blow off any excess water inside the engine compartment. I backed out of my driveway, put it in drive, and proceeded to drive. I drove approximately 1.5 miles and attempted to turn around. After backing up, I came to a stop and attempted to put it in drive but it would not go.

I looked at all the fuses in the cab as well as under the hood but all look good. I took the negative terminal from the battery off in attempts to do a reset but no luck. Does anyone have an idea of what the issue is? At this point I would need to tow it to have it looked at by a mechanic as it only drives in reverse. Please tell me this is a simple fix.

Oof. Pressure washing the engine bay is a super risky thing. Generally you don't want high pressure or large amounts of water in there. I'm sorry I can't be more help on a specific issue, but there is so much electrical under the hood and doing it while running is a different beast altogether.

I did not do it under high pressure and mainly focused on knocking the dust off. Agreed on the electrical under the hood but it ran fine in drive and now won’t shift into it.

I do not have a reader to see what codes may be popping up. Short of buying one I would have to tow it somewhere to do this.

Maybe the two are unrelated. It may just be coincidence that your having issues after washing. If you take it to a shop I would just let them know that it won't shift into drive. I wouldn't cloud their troubleshooting with an assumption that the two are related.

If you can get to an auto parts store (AutoZone, Napa, etc.) most will loan you a reader to check out codes. When you say that the transmission will not go into drive, have you tried releasing the transmission lock by the shifter?

I thought I read somewhere that if your brake lights are out it wont shift into drive. Are you brake lights working?

NewImprovedRon it is not the shift lock. It will go into reverse and neutral with no problems. I did however try the shift lock anyways but it does not allow me to put it into drive.

Tilly the brake lights are working.

I know you said you checked all the fuses under the hood, but if it were mine, I would check them again with a test light as sometimes they can look OK, but be burnt out.

I'm going to assume that you can physically move the xmsn lever to the "D" position, but when you do, the xmsn does not engage in drive. Your P0705 code means the that xmsn ECU cannot tell what position the lever is in. So it seems that you need to tackle the problem from that angle. A bad or corroded (or maybe even wet) connector, chewed wire, or even an ECU gone south.

Since the only way that I know of for the ECU to know anything about the shifter position is to have electrical contacts on the shifter mechanism, then the wire or the contact for the "D" position is not working properly.

It will not go into drive at all. It will shift normally into reverse and neutral but does not go any further.

Linkage issue? Not sure the extent of the linkage from shifter to trans gear selector as most of this stuff has gone electrical and servo / solenoid.

So you're stating that you cannot move the shift lever beyond the neutral position. Something's broke. Something has broken off and fallen in to jam the linkage.

I was viewing this helpful tread yesterday while trying to figure out why my Tundra wouldn't shift into Drive. Ran the computer check got the PO705 code and took it to my mechanic to sus out the problem. Turns out a rock had gotten wedged in so that it was restricting the shifter. $42 fix!
