    Hey all,

My 2014 Tundra suddenly wouldn't shift out of park without me pressing the shift lock release button. I called my local Toyota service dept and they said most likely the shift lock solenoid was bad, and I ordered the part. Well, I've got the part (part number 85431-34010) but I cannot find anywhere on Google that tells me WHERE this part is located on the Tundra so I can replace it! Does anyone know???

    Thanks!

I haven't changed it, but it's normally near the shifter on other vehicles. You're mechanically making it release instead of electrically doing it.

Thanks for the reply! I pulled off the shifter housing covers yesterday and looked around in there but I didn't see it. It's possible I just missed it, so I'll look again. When I searched Google I found one page that said it was next to the shifter and another that said it was attached to the brake pedal. I looked in both places but didn't see it.

You bit off a nice one with this project.

Assuming you have a floor shifter, it appears to be a metal box (Shift Lock Control ECU) about 3" X 3" X 1" that is buried on the underside of the shifter. Looks like the shifter assembly has to be physically removed to access the ECU.

Random but, are your brake lights working correctly? This can also happen if the brake light fuse is blown or brake pedal switch is malfunctioning since the cpu doesnt know you're pressing the brake pedal to release from park.

    ^^^^^^^

This right here.. brake switch is on the pedal... try engaging the foot ebrake and see if that works to shift out of park... ask me how I know.. lol... check the brake plug as well see if its accidentally damaged or has come loose...

I'll check those. Also, I don't have a check engine light on, but I do have a code puller. Would a damaged brake switch or bad solenoid show up on the code puller?

I don't think the fuse is bad because every once in a blue moon I will be able to shift out of park normally. But for the most part I have to depress the lock release button. But I will check the brake pedal switch.

I know it isn't the same vehicle, but I had a similar problem in a Chrysler 300 and like he stated above, it was under the whole shifting mechanism. I'm sure there is a reason to put it there, but it sure makes it more exciting to get to it and fix it. Felt like I knew that car a whole lot better after getting it fixed though.

Did you ever resolve your shift problem? I replaced my brake light switch and the problem persists. Occasionally it works normally.

I did resolve my issue. Problem was in the shifter assembly itself. The shop quoted me $1200 to fix - $750 for the assembly and the rest for labor, which is BS. I ended up buying a replacement assembly on Ebay for $125 from a 2018 Tundra and swapped out the bad one on my own with help from a YouTube video. The shifter hasn't changed design between the 2014 and 2018 so it fit perfectly and works with no problem.

Glad you got it sorted. Did a small plastic piece fail inside the shifter, that's what happened in my Chrysler 300. I think it was heat fatigue from the Texas summers that caused the plastic to become brittle, but that's just my theory. Was able to fix mine with a paperclip, not kidding.

good point. when i first bought the truck used, i had a rear tail light burn out, which i thought was a little strange for a truck with 49K miles (but maybe not). Also, it seems like the shifter problem is getting worse. i've had it happen every other day or so now. Not great. But i will check the tail lights before i take it to the dealer for the solenoid replacement.
