What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

Well I haven’t done anything to my first gen today but I did order some parts! awhile back my tailgate latch broke on me so I did a quick search on Amazon and found out that there is ones with built in back up cameras! Instantly ordered that and it’ll be here Friday so I’ll post an update abt that. My interior driver door handle also crapped out on me so I did some investigating on it. Turns out that the wire that attaches the latch release to the handle broke. Got a new cable ordered for that so it should be in soon. The final thing I ordered was some new LED headlight bulbs. I wasn’t looking to break the bank on them so I just ordered some cheap Amazon ones. If anyone has any suggestions for some stuff to add to the truck I’m open for suggestions. I’ll attach the links and some pics of the truck. Also my LED pods I had mounted in my fog lights fell out on me going down the road so if anyone has any suggestions on how to get a good solid mount on those that would be awesome

Might have found one to get back in the 1st Gen groove. It’s a 06 Access Cab, supposedly a one owner well maintained truck. We will make the 2.5 hrs drive tomorrow and check it out. Pretty basic truck, pretty much what I’m looking for.

 

Check that frame very closely. Make sure nothing was covered up with paint to hide rust. Get timing belt history.

I agree with nick. I technically got burned with crackie initially, but the free* frame from Toyota made it all worthwhile.

 

Inspect that frame with a fine tooth comb!!

That tailgate handle camera is a ripoff/knockoff of the Master Tailgaters handle (MT-TT00B) which is also sold on scAmazon.

Some reviews online say the pull of the handle is a bit diff't than stock, and to be gentle with the all-plastic body. Be sure to lube and clean everything during the install, so your handle doesn't break sooner. You'll be in there longer, and if more people would spend the 15-30 mins to do this once every few years, they'd never see the OEM handle break. Such an easy thing to keep up with.

 

Honestly all the FGT handles suck. It’s a lame design compared to 3rd Gen Tacoma. I’d love to retrofit some parts. I’m annoyed at the power lock for FGT too. All subpar.

Do they make horizontal tie downs? Thats really the only place the titan bed bests the tundra, is tying things down seems noticeably easier. Apples to apples, sure, titan is wider. but if i'm tetrising things in tight, the titans flat hooks are easier.

 

Found my gas tank is leaking (dripping) from the side; most likely from corrosion. Only a week after I had the fuel line fixed. Life is NOT going well.

Best options? New 2002 tank is $850+. Aftermarket is $500+. Salvage is most likely $200 but can I find a rust free tank in my area?

They're selling on ebay for $150 but the shipping cost is $500+!

 

With cost of shipping in mind... I'd just buy new at that point.

 

Would a gas tank from a newer first gen work? They switched to plastic at some point. 2004 maybe? If you found a plastic junkyard unit you wouldn't have to worry about rust.

I’d be willing to be it’s shaped differently with the straps not in the same exact place.

I'd slap some JB Weld on it and start looking for a southern truck considering your existing frame issues.

 

Will JB weld stick to it? Especially if it’s rusted right around it? Looks like the leak is right under the strap from the look of it. I’d probably have to lift the tank an inch or two to access the leak.

 

Just press the tank up with a jack, and take the strap off. IIRC one side is a bolt, and the other side is a pin with cotter pin

 

I’ll try doing that once the tank gets down to a quarter or less. I’m afraid the pressure of the strap might be holding it back from gushing out. Best to try when it’s nearly empty.

 

Some of the rubber costing came off my tank when I changed gas stank straps due to rust. I'd put some flex tape on it.

 

I’m not sure how I’m going to see past the plastic liner over it though.

Exactly what I was thinking. There are so many first gens for sale on marketplace right now where I live. Equal parts double cab and access cabs.

 

If this guy’s tank was only $300 from Rockauto, that may be the way to go.
