Trailer Hitch

I'm needing a trailer hitch attachment and ball to hall a small U-Haul trailer.
behind my 2022 Tundra limited. Not sure how much drop I need?
Anyone have any suggestions

Depending on the weight of the trailer you are going to rent, consider a bit of truck back end squat when measuring your truck's ball height. But not very much likely, just an inch maybe.

 

Are most of you going with a 4" drop for general all around use?

 

I would look for one that is adjustable....

Yea, about that.

I have the drop maxed out to 4" on the two hitches I have used. I do have the rear air suspension adjusters set to maximum height on the truck though.

 

That one is very nice. Just more expense that I would like . I do not tow often.
This is really just a one and done tow for moving my daughter to college .

I leave that one in the truck so if I need to tow something light, I have an adjustable hitch with all the different ball sizes. So far so good with that one.

 

How far are you towing AutinTexas? If it's only like 100 miles or less, I'd suggest getting the ball height from Uhaul, measure your truck, then find something on Amazon or your local farm supply store and call it done. If the trailer leans a bit I've found that's fine for shorter trips. ps: if you're not a frequent tow-er, then driving a bit slower than normal is a good idea too, which lessens the impact of a somewhat tilting trailer. Safety first

I measured my receiver tube on my 2022 Tundra at 20"
U-Haul is listing a trailer coupler height of 18"
So it looks like I will need to get a 2" drop for the trailer hitch
( or should it be a 4" drop so the center of the ball is at a 2" drop)

Or I guess I can stop being a cheap ass and just buy the adjustable.

 

You're not going to have much difference on a 2" vs 4" drop. Biggest thing you need to pay attention to with that U-Haul trailer is how you distribute the weight inside the trailer.

I bought this. I have a 2023 SR5 TRD Off Road Double Cab with 6.5' bed. It tows my Proline 14' double axel snowmobile trailer level, with two sleds in it. It came with a dog bone lock. Bought it at Tractor Supply.

 

I have 2 Weigh-safe hitches. They both have a 6" shank that can be flipped so you get a huge range of heights. One is a WDH and the other is standard hitch. My truck picture has the Airstream attached and WDH is active. It sits very level. If I put bigger tires on or a lift, I can just slide the hitch up or down on the shank to suit the trailer.

 

I use a Curt 45142 to take boat to ramp since salt water and weigh safe don’t mix. I like that the ball is welded on since I have had a few stolen.

They have different sizes and weight options. I am looking for something that can smooth the ride while towing a boat. The problem I have is that on some patches of freeway, the ride becomes a bit bumpy. I am looking for options to fix that.

 

I'm sorry to tell you, but trying to add "suspension" to your hitch will not mitigate inadequate vehicle and (most likely) trailer suspension.

-AVS/airbags on your truck?
-size + weight of your boat+trailer?

 

Yes i have AVS and boat weight about 5k it's a 24 foot surf boat.

While you are correct, hitches can smooth out the side a bit. Look at Gen y, shocker, and airsafe. Again you still need a capable truck, but it can make the ride more enjoyable.

I used a friends Gen y glyder to tow our horse, and I’ve never had any issues with a regular hitch, you did feel bumps quite a bit less. I’m towing with an hybrid with airbags and avs. The trailer was 2400lbs and the horse was under 900lbs. It was Especially noticeable on bridges, washboard and whatnot. I imagine it was probably easier on the horse as well. That being said i was under the recommended tounge weight and still noticed some difference.

When I was moving from NV to ID, I towed 3 motorcycles on a trailer with the bed loaded up with heavy boxes. The weight in the bed lowered the hitch mount about 2 inches so I was lucky that my hitch had 2" drop.
