Why does anyone do anything in 2021? It's certainly not as understandable as catalytic converter theft, because it's just malicious. I imagine Karen has done this many times for HOA violations, and that sort of thing. Plus, I think several here are LEO's... so they are rightfully paranoid. Just wearing that uniform makes you a target in some areas.

At the end of the day, they are only selling peace of mind, but all of us know that. I was stationed on the Gulf Coast during Hurricane Katrina, and in the days soon after, I came home around midnight to see people ice picking gas tanks for fuel in my gated apartment complex. Anyone out there with similar experience living under austere contingency probably feels the need to guard their fuel door in some way, fully understanding the ultimate reality. Peace of mind for those of us that have lived on the edge, that's all it is, brother.

I just purchased my 2018 AMi just now for my 2018. I too also want to change my lock. Do you have the spec of the lock?

There was a thread about locking caps (or maybe a thread-jack about locking caps) with a link to a high quality replacement lock. Sadly, I can't find it. Maybe someone with a better memory can find it an post it here.

And, of course, right after I posted this I found the link.

The Stant cap works great... no codes... but in winter the lock freezes after I wash my truck. So I have to switch back to the OEM cap for winter. But if there's no cold winter weather where you are, no problem!

    Thanks everyone!

I think I’m working to do this modification just to be on the safe side since I do a lot of 4 wheelin and have to park in the city for long time.

any word on a 2021 cap performance?

AMI Styling is no longer selling this. You can still order it on their website, get a confirmation (but no email), and a credit card charge (that seems to be automatically reversed in 2 - 3 days), but no notification that they're not actually selling it. You have to call them for that.

    I suspect they're not doing well, business-wise.

Personally I stay away from locking caps. If a gas thief wants your gas they are going to drill your tank if they can't get it the easy way. I'd rather lose a tank of gas than a gas tank.

I just want to keep the "honest" thieves away, drill away if you want for the fuel, I just don't want you dropping SUGAR into my tank and ruining all kinds of stuff downstream. Hence the Stant cap, $22 on Amazon now and 2 sets of keys, EZ peasy.

Oh yeah and we wouldn't have to have this "nasty" discussion if Toyota just built autos like they did my 2001 4Runner, 2003 Camry and 2006 Prius that have an inside lock release for fuel doors. Really Toyota, we have to go that CHEAP?

I didn't have any but had a couple times where the lock froze so I stopped using it.

None. I just put one fuel key on wife's and my key set while using one of those "pull-apart" keyrings so I don't have to turn vehicle off when fueling... Just gives me a little piece of mind in this crazy world....Luck all.
