So the situation is when the washer is ready to discharge the water out into the drain pipe, the water backflows out and on the floor, I do have a screen wrapped around the end of discharge hose that they sell at Home Depot, I do clean it off like every other week, also I pour drain cleaner and it does"sometimes" help, then it'll happen again, water on the floor, I tore down the drywall this it what it looks like

    IMG_20220903_161103.jpg

Is the pee trap at fault??? Gray pipe is vent to roof, plumbing company came to "snake" through that vent pipe, drywall behind is bedroom, but that goes out to street front of house, I would say 10-12' from the drain down to floor is the "clean out" to the right in the kitchen, so the drains don't line up, house was built in '50's-'60's, so that's cast iron pipe, any help greatly appreciated

I would cut out as much of the old cast iron on the drain side and replace with ABS or PVC. I’m sure the P-trap and San-tee have all types of corrosion inside of them slowing the drain. Just hope your problem isn’t further down the line.

    Edit:
The white washer box above should have a place to knockout a space for the new 2” ABS.

Temporarily or to check for a clog further down sure. Do not leave a plumbing fixture without a P-trap. Very stinky and I’m sure not healthy to breathe the gases that escape.

Yeah thought of that, IDK about plumbing too much, just remember what my Dad would do, I remember this same situation, there was some type of black goo material he placed around a pipe, with a similar situation

    It's good
exactly. That iron pipe is probably the equivalent of 1/2" now.

How do you cut cast iron? And replace with ABS or PVC? Same parts?

Use hubs like this to adapt from ABS to the cast iron. I would just use a sawsall with a diamond blade for cast iron

Use ABS. You can cut with a sawzall or similar and a metal cut blade.

Last comment would be once you have the cuts made and all the old pipe removed. I would suggest use a shop vac to pull out as much corrosion and gunk as you can then pour drain cleaner down the drain side and let it sit with you mock up the new pipe. Rinse with hot water from your washer hot water hose for a while once you have everything back together. Before you patch the drywall of course.

I would seal it off with a rag when you have a jet nozzle on the hose shove the hose in there and try to flush out that cast pipe as much as possible?? A friend just had this problem and plumbing company wanted six grand to fix and install new pipe. We-he cut pipe vacuumed out a great deal of just plain ole rust like a foot or more then we ran a hose down the pipe and flushed it out. Now it’s like new. Just another thought??

What post 13 said above,,, I didn’t read every post. :) Good luck

Yep cast iron is a bitch when it rots. I've had to do too many repairs like that on my old house. All suggestions that have been made are very viable fixes. Good luck !!!

Happens on my washer drain as well. House is only 24 ears old. This did not start until I bought a new washer, that seems to be the culprit, as well as the HE detergent. Seems it suds up more even when you use less. I ended up sealing the pipe and drain hose with silicone. Most folks wrap a rag around the drain hose to soak up the suds that over spill.

Yeah, never did with the older washer we had, sometimes it doesn't backflow when we put new washer on "quick wash" cycle, I did think of that with silicone, but decided against it, for now bought 25' of drain hose and run hose down garage out to driveway

Also no one seemed to mention make sure your vent like is clear. Hook your shop vac up to it as well and make sure there are no obstructions.

    @Shanet421
Tagged you, had a question, once those sections are cut out, and I put either ABS or PVC, what do I use to bond it to cast iron and to the vent pipe?

They have just about every size imaginable. I’m guessing from your OP you need 2 that are 1 1/2” on both ends

Correct. Try to cut out as may visible CI (cast iron) angled fittings. Things will improve.
