Ay, no wonder it looked familiar, one of my buddies uses Eagle 1-8x24!

Do you run a tripod with those? Tried one not so long ago and been impressed with how good it feels to long range with one of those. Thinking about getting Leupold Alpine hunting tripod from https://gritroutdoors.com/optics/optic-accessories/tripods/ and installing a pig saddle head. Should be pretty good for long range.

24". I'm super stoked, I've been wanting a gun to reach out far and this has been on my list for awhile and the gun store randomly got a shipment in so I had to do it! Now to research and find accessories :D

I've never owned a 6.5, but my understanding is 24" is optimal barrel length on that cartridge

How far you planning on reaching out to??

Well it has a 0.5MOA guarantee and from the videos I've watched that's true, and a man sized target at 1000yds should be plenty capable of the gun. I'd like to try and hit something at a mile, but I know nothing of long range shooting so I think that'll be the goal to work up to.

If it's like my Steyr it'll shoot pretty much any cartridge well, but it'll definitely like a few waaaay more than others. After barrel break-in and proper cleaning, I'd recommend doing an ammo test @ 100yds. I think you'll be surprised when you see the grouping differences w/various cartridges.

I think the 6.5 is much more forgiving than most due to its flatter trajectory, but when you start pushing past 600 yds, you'll want it to be as tight and consistent as possible. So, if you figured out the cartridge early on (at your zero distance) you'll have fewer adjustments as you stretch it out. For me it was Hornady ELD-X Precision Hunter 178gr (308); this round gave me sub 0.5MOA. With that being said a close second or third was Sierra MatchKing in 175gr and 168gr respectively.

The least expensive cartridge for me to run w/satisfactory performance (that was closest to the ELD-X) was Federal Premium 180gr. So, when I'm figuring out adjustments, etc. as I step through different ranges and conditions, I test w/the Federal and then confirm w/ELD-X. Saved a few hundred $$ by doing most of the figuring out w/the Federal and Sierras (depending on price and avail)... Of course all of this is based on factory ammo, and I'm just assuming you are not starting off w/custom or hand loads :notsure:

I believe most of the cartridges for your rifle are 120gr or 143gr, and I believe Hornady makes the ELD-X in 143gr for the 6.5. I would think the heavier grain would give you better results, but you won't know for sure until you test.

Another misnomer is that a completely "scrubbed out and cleaned" barrel is the most accurate. If you pay attention to your groupings during your barrel break-in, you'll see that immediately after cleaning the group opens up. However, once you get about 8 or 9 rounds down range, those groups start to tighten up again; and this will be the "sweet spot" as most barrels like and are engineered to perform best with a little fowling.

Lastly, if you are looking for a good read, I always recommend Long Range Shooting by Cleckner. It's labeled as a beginner's guide, but the information it contains is highly detailed and applicable to most applications of long range shooting and will definitely help you reach your goal. https://www.amazon.com/Long-Range-S...46616&sprefix=long+range+shoot,aps,234&sr=8-1

Another "must have" in my opinion is the Mildot Master, which is an analog, old school, slide rule style, chart to help quickly figure out drops and drift w/o having to remember complex formulas, etc. It works with MOA or Mil reticles! https://www.amazon.com/Mildot-Enter...e18-4bb7-a5d9-591fb79f3dd0&pd_rd_i=B008WTWKEA

My apologies if this information was redundant to you or too basic in nature, but just thought I'd throw out a couple of things that have helped me along the way. Have fun and don't forget to post updates of your progress!!!!

Pro2a tactical sourced complete 16” SS 223 wylde upper on a complete Anderson lower. Vortex Crossfire 2. Purchased the upper nearly 2 years ago. Done nothing but get my blood pressure up until just recently.

Took awhile to get it out to shoot then ran into constant feed problems on all my lowers. FTF when firing or chambering from bolt lock. Would only run decently on Hexmags, that was it. Nothing else presented rounds at the right angle to run it.

After what I consider more back and fourth than should have been needed they took it back for a feed ramp and chamber polish a couple months ago. Tried to tell Me I could do it myself if I didn’t want the 3 week turn around time. I said no, I lack the tools to get a barrel off and had never cut feed ramps and from what I read it’s a bit of a process requiring some technique.

They did take it back and true the feed ramps. When I got it back I did A bolt rebuilt and added an h buffer to tame some Extraction issues from a bolt I swapped in while trying to diagnose and trouble shoot and she runs like a Top on any magazine now. Looking at new stocks. Maybe an optic upgrade now that it shoots well enough for it to be worth it to set aside a day to get out to the 100 yd Range.

She runs now but I’ll look elsewhere for finished uppers going forward. This was an impulse buy I did without thoroughly researching the vendor. They don’t have a bad rep, just not much of one. Next upper gonna come from Aero or maybe PSA.

I'd definitely consider switching Vortex for smth like Holosun if you looking to upgrade Vortex. Night and day in my experience(maybe I just got lucky with Holo and unlucky with Vortex though :D )

There's a couple more since that pic. R-L: Winchester '73 (built: 1880/.44-40); Winchester '92 (built: 1902/.25-20); Winchester '94 (built: 1915/.30 Win); Win '94 (built:1966/.30-30); Win '94 1/1000 (built:?/.45 Colt). The rest are Winchester replicas, except far left which is a Henry...
