Good point. I used to stick forks and paperclips in electrical outlets as a kid and I never felt so much as a bowel tickle from that, specifically.

I did get hit by a 220 HO 8ft fluorescent fixture on a grocery store ceiling once, and fell off a 20ft scaffold. That didn't make me poop either.

But I'm also not known for having a loose caboose, either, so there's that...

 

Those fluorescent fixtures have even higher voltage transformers in them. You rode the lightening for sure that time

IIRC, I'm pretty sure it was the high output fixtures in the freezer cases that were 277, and I vaguely remember someone telling me why that was the case, but I don't recall the logic behind it all.

Basically the protective cover over the spring-loaded end of higher-voltage fixtures on the ceilings, and the higher-output ones in the freezer cases, would disintegrate from the low humidity and maybe low temperature in the case or high temperature of the ceiling. That end of the fixture is spring-loaded so you can wedge 8ft bulbs in.

I can't tell you how many times over the year or so I worked for this lighting company in Orlando that re-lamped entire grocery stores overnight, that I'd go into a case and accidentally tap a plunger, that would disintegrate, and I'd make contact with the spring, as I'm leaning in the case, touching metal.

Sometimes it was just smarts. A couple of times I found myself on the other side of the aisle opening my eyes to stars. I was young, stupid, and just took it as "eh, part of the job!" back then. I'm sure I fried a bunch of brain cells in the process, but you do what you gotta do to survive. This was long before I 'married up'.

I'm pretty sure the fixtures on the ceiling were just 220. They used single bullet-shaped male pins on the bulb ends. The HO 277 fixtures in freezer cases had more of an oval-shaped female connector on the bulb end. Most deli cases, 2x2 and 2x4 ceiling fixtures, and standard valance aisles were mostly bi-pin bulbs. We also had to do exit lights, fire lighting, etc.

One of many weird ass jobs in my lifetime, struggling to make ends meet. Glad those days were over, but I learned so much shit about people, work, electricity and mechanics during that time, I wouldn't trade it for anything.

 

Hahah damn, now it all makes sense! That’s a cool story and learning experience, I don’t think I’d give up any of the hard learning experiences in my life.

im no expert, maybe @bmf4069 can chime in; but I think wild leg(277v) lights are more efficient? Or maybe the ballasts like to run better off 277?

we definitely have a wild, wild leg at work, one day; Milwaukee battery chargers started to glow red hot and start smoking, while the water cooler sounded like it had a turbo charger on it, and the microwave was doing nascar laps, hahahah I couldn’t stop laughing, we plugged other chargers in, ran the microwave more.

we’ve had other issues at campus, the electricians like to be elusive and say it was a tripped breaker……. Why were you getting 240 out of a wall outlet???!?

 

I feel like it had something to do with the freezing cold inside the cases.

 

Now most are LEDs but pretty sure the boards don’t like that cold either; I mainly had warranty issues from water because the lazy sparkies never calked INSIDE the conduit; freezers will draw in moisture from any gap they can…….

That’s why the doors and windows have strip heaters in them, keep them above the dew point

It’s been a while. Hope you guys are doing well. Here is my latest upgrade.

 

So basically, a HO fixture is used for cold environments. The ballasts will send out a starting pulse to kick start the tube. It fires at around 1000v, then has a steady output around 600v. They are a huge pain in the ass are are very temperamental. I had my finger on the end of the tube as a location marker and put the other end in the tombstone. The ballast fired right then and burned two little spots on my finger.

On a side note @shifty`, you can stick shit in an outlet all day long, as long as you're not grounded or touching the neutral. Just remember, the right side is hot, left is neutral. If the ground is down.

Got the driveway repave/extension done a few weeks or so ago. Happy to have the extra room/storage. You don't need less cars just more driveway! Now I want a carport too lol.


Picked up a 12x6.5 tilt trailer as well.

Been looking around for one for a while just to have around in case of needing to move stuff. Used the tilt function for a 4 wheeler and it's pretty nice so far. Trailer is a bit older but seems to be decent shape anyway and has a new light kit and some new metal on it. With the way the trailer market seems to be lately it seemed to be a good price.
Gonna try and pull the hubs out and check out the wheel bearings tomorrow.

 

It's interesting that my folks still have a wired conduit sticking out of the ground with those twist tie-offs for electrical circuits. It sits right where the pump for the 30' above ground pool existed 25 years ago.

The electrician who wired it either lost his license or maybe his green card from Ireland a year or two after it was done. It'll be interesting how that's addressed when they go to sell the house in the future.

oh yea. knew about it. the aero rotors never have been cheap. i've got a buddy thats trying to see what his cost is on them.


the ones from toyota are drilled. 340 a piece my cost. but i'd rather slotted.

(at least the old product info says drilled)

I did find one pic of some pipe I ran when I started working at the new place. Transition kick 90s (going from one axis to another while changing height, basically changing all three axiis) are a bitch. I call it the waterfall.
