Changed my oil tonight and noticed this.

There was a drop of fluid (wasn't a full drop if that matters) but a closer look didn't show a breach in the seal. Obviously if there's some fluid, I know it is leaking.

My concern is that the shop that did my gears may have done this by accidentally dropping or using a pry bar to pop the CV out.

Dang. That can't be good either, though it doesn't look terrible, perhaps can be fixed with JB weld or something.

It’s still sealed, further in. That does suck though. I definitely used a pry bar to pop my CVs out, maybe I chose a meatier spot to pry

Mine looks like that. When I first tried popping out the CV I didn’t really know where to pry it from and chewed up the tube.

How long ago did you get the gears done? Could the drop be just leftover oil from when the axles were out?

End of April. Nah I think it's fresh. The pic shows what it looks like after I wiped with a rag.

Then it’s the seal. Easy to replace. I replaced my driver side seal a couple weeks ago. Make sure to get the correct one because the driver and passenger sides are not interchangeable.

I did my outer seals recently and the driver side still weeps. Do you guys swap in new snap rings, too? My driver's seems to have excessive movement. If I had to guess, that's why.

Same vein - none of you were able to give them a good yank? You had to use a pry bar?

I wonder that if the seal is replaced, with that chunk gone, would it still leak....if so, it's pointless to replace

You're not wrong, but at the very least you'll know, then you can figure out what to do next.

This is exactly why I bring a creeper board with me after getting warranty work or any shop work done for that matter.

The chunk missing in the housing won't cause any leaks directly, but it does expose the actual CV axle seal to dust, dirt, and debris, since all of that can now get directly behind the dust shield, you can see the lip of the dust shield through the hole in your axle housing. Check out the second picture of this post, right next to the screwdriver on the table, that is the dust shield (thanks @Cruzer for the dust shield recommendation when I had to replace my axle seals)

    https://www.tundras.com/threads/front-diff-seals.106673/#post-2751926

If it were my truck, I'd try JB weld with the CV axle out (with seal still installed to keep oil from contaminating the bonding surface for the JB weld) then lightly sand it down the match the machined surface as good as possible.

Or put some gorilla tape on it just to cover the hole. That stuff really holds up good.

I sent the pic to my mechanic. He immediately apologized and mentioned that it probably happened when his tech pulled the CV. He assumed full responsibility and said to bring in the truck and they'll do what it takes to make it right.

Yeah he's pretty damn cool in my book. I also got my one piece shield from him and he installed it.

    Update:
Finally had time to take the truck in for the once over and repair. He immediately ordered the part and installed it as soon as he got it in. Took the truck to him on Monday and I have it back today.

I didn't know you could get the axle housing tube on its own but thankfully you can.
