Yeah, that’s why I used “knew”, past tense….sad indeed. He definetely knew his Hunter equip, I suppose it’s because he help design it !

DJ was an ACE ~ he definitely "knew" his stuff . . . and sadly, past tense.
The guy had pretty much seen it all . . .
He had a gift of being able to explain it to me so that I could understand it as well.

Ok, it's settled, I'll get it replaced. Love the truck and want to keep it forever... BTW, anybody know what the spec is for #hrs service labor required to change a timing belt? The quotes I'm getting are all over the place...

I think I saw someone here say 4-5 hours?

We've had chatter about this before, ow wild the pricing is. Some guys are getting it done at qualified shops as low as $750 with OEM (either Aisin or Denso) parts, including water pump and tensioners. We talked about this a little bit over here.

As you may see, I personally got quoted north of $2200 from my local stealership. But a lot of guys seem to be coming in between $900 - $1600 depending on who they ask and whether they're using OEM parts. Stealership will always be more, most of them over here concatenate hours on service and charge premium on the parts.

Mine was ~$1200 at a Toyota specialist in town. I thought it was a fair price.

If everything were not so horrifically expensive now, I'd say, just do it, but this is a pretty pricey replacement.

Pull your cover back and take thorough look at it then decide. If you have the bread to do it, then go for it.

Even if it costs $2,000, some dealerships right now are adding $10,000 "market value adjustments" to new vehicles due to "supply chain issues". That's not even the cost of the vehicle, just an arbitrary markup.

It's worth every penny to do the maintenance.

First of all, I'm going to say replace it.... Now that I've got that out the way, I was on my original TB on my 2004 4.7L until YESTERDAY at 195,1xx miles. It didn't snap, but I got it replaced along with water pump and tensioner because after planning to trade it in, I finally decided to keep it. Here's a couple photos of this 18 year old TB with over 195K miles on it... Don't yall yell at me too much.

Did you own the truck its whole life?

Only asking because that looks like a Mitsubishi timing belt, not an OEM Denso timing belt. If it were the the case, your words could give people false hope theirs could last for almost 200k miles also, and it's "OK". We know it's remotely possible for one to last that long, but ...

Now you've got me confused, because I got it in 2005 with 14K miles on it. Was never mentioned that a TB replacement was done on a one year old truck The biggest job I've had on it since then was axle shaft bearing.

Not only that, but it looks really good for a belt that old. It doesn't even look cracked.

Sometimes the cracks in the rubber won't show until you zoom in while flexing the belt.

That belt definitely has a good 80-100k miles on it. It's also possible Mitsubishi was making Denso belts back then, or Denso makes Mitsubishi belts today, or they share a manufacturer (dunno which). I haven't seen a 15-20 year old Denso belt, but I recognized the writing on that one as a Mitsu belt. Took me a few minutes to sanity check it on Google Images.

Could be but we've had other members post pictures of their old belts and it was immediately clear it was past its normal lifespan.

I had to go out and look at that old belt again, because I was wondering why a barely year old truck at 14K miles would have a TB replaced

    Looks original to me.

that said I’ve seen belts that look good, fail. That’s why I’ve replaced 3 of these 4.7s at work.

Well, I'll do a visual check on mine, but that one looks pretty good.
Seeing as my V6 is a non-interference engine, I'm gonna let it go.
I don't put that many miles on it anyway now that I retired.

Huh. Maybe they do share a manufacturer. Or I guess it's possible Mitsu is/was making it for Toyota back then, and re-branding.
