i just bought an 04 tundra and i now noticed the control arms rubbing on the tire. there is an 1/8" gap but it clearly rubs when hitting bumps and turning. the recommended tire size is 265\65\17 or 265\70\16. the truck has 265\70\17 on it currently but its hard for me to imagine a quarter inch gap being enough clearance? every truck i see in parking lots have 1"or more of clearance. I'm pretty sure my truck has a level kit on it but i don't know how to tell if there is or not. i don't see any spacers and all i know about the shocks is they are old man emu shocks. the reason I'm sure it has a level kit is because they guy i bought it from offers to take it out, when i asked him about it he taught me about "rake" in a truck. also the control arms being so close to the tire prevented the guy at the alignment place from getting a proper alignment. so my question is what should i do? i don't want to be dumping money into suspension issues or constantly be buying new tires because of this. I don't know what the off set of a stock 04 tundra tire is, or how to tell what mine currently is but i do understand i can buy new rims with a negative offset to fix this but i will cause premature wear on the wheel bearings. i do know i want to avoid spacers. i am thinking i may just have to go back to stock shocks and tires?

OME specializes in lifting, so yes, it probably has a lift in the front.

Since you seem to know nothing about this, you may want to take a second to post some pictures of whatever it is you want help with.

You haven't mentioned what cab style your truck is, and if regular cab, if it's a long bed or not.

You also didn't mention what wheels are on it, stock (if so which) or if aftermarket, what size, backspace, etc.?

hey shifty your correct i know nothing about lifts suspension etc...i i believe i have an sr5 4 door. i can't tell if its TRD package or not. the wheels are 17" aftermarket , i had a hard time measuring while on the truck but the back spacing is 5". i found a link on this site that said thats max what it should be. i can't yet figure out how to do pics on here but the problem is that there is only an 1/8" gap between the UCA and the tire and this is preventing a propper alignment. i am looking for a long lasting solid solution(not a hack job) as i plan on keeping this truck as long as i can. i know if i care for it i can get to 600,000 miles

Snap a pic of the wheel and tire from the outside as well. Sounds like you need either wheel spacers or different wheels.

If unsure and while others help with your control-arms, take a look at driver door frame. There is a sticker like below. Either look up the number in chart or tell us what it is and we can tell for sure. We don't need/want the VIN # but the Model code(numbers/letters in rectangle) is unique to your vehicle and it will tell us what it is. If you post a picture of sticker, try to mask out the VIN # since it's somewhat personal to you.

so im not sure if i measured my rim width correctly but i measured from one lip to the other lip on the inside of the rim because the tires are still mounted on the truck. i came up with 9". i don't know if this affects the tire size? like can i still put a 265/65/17 tire on a rim that is ....lets say 7" instead of 9"? i went through a link on this forum and saw stock rims for my truck are 7" or 7 1/2 " i can't remember but it wasn't 9". would getting 7" wide rims help me solve my problem?

I think it’s a wheel offset issue. That could be fixed with new rims or wheel spacers.

I’ll have to defer to other members here who know the specific offset you need for the tires you have mounted.

Wheel backspacing/offset issue, I agree with Jack.

Read this or better yet watch the video, it'll explain what we mean: https://www.discounttire.com/learn/offset-backspace

Whoever chose those rims for your truck didn't bother to check any of this.

You need rims that are appropriate for your vehicle.

    Please stop calling them rims.

inside your wheels, there should be a stamp that says the size and offset or backspacing.

the 20x9’s (+18) I recently got ahold of rub the control arms and will touch the frame at full lock. While spacers will fix that, I’d need a lift and some trimming to fit the 33” tires. Since I don’t particularly care for the 20’s it’s easy for me to say they don’t fit, but if I didn’t have other options, I could either get smaller tires, or spacers, suspension lift, and fold the seam inside the fender well to give them room during articulation. I also know bigger heavier wheels and tires are going to tax the brakes and bearings, and cost some extra gas. To each their own, it’s your truck, do what makes you happy. But big tires cost more than just the rubber.

    I default to 'wheels'.

    Sometimes 'rims' slips out.

As long as y'all understand what I'm talking about, IDC.

I'm scared to look up that Tyrese reference.

OP, I think the easiest option would be to get some Toyota take off wheels from a 4 runner or Tacoma at least around me they are $100-$300 depending on the wheels.

i found some wheels that are 17x9 with a 4-1/2" back spacing. this will push the whole wheel out 1" more from the control arm and this should work, i hope, we will test fit it on monday

yeah you should be good with that setup. I had 285/75/16s on 16x8 wheels with 0 offset and 4.5 backspace with no problems. Then I decided to add wheel spacers and had to start trimming :anonymous:

now i just learned i measured my wheel wrong and that it is a 17 x 7-1/2 and not 9. so if i think about it my current set up is a 17x 7-1/2 with a 5 -1/2 back spacing. if i go with a 17x9 and a 4-1/2" backspacing , this will bring my whole tire and wheel out 2-1/2 . now I'm wondering how bad this is on my suspension system?

These are Toyota 6x5.5 right? Just make sure the center bore is the right size and it's not from a Chevy or something. Gotta make sure they are hub centric. Do these wheels come with tires or are you switching tires over?

ya they are 6x5.5 they don't come with tires so I'm going to reuse two of them and get two new ones. how can i tell if th wheels I'm buying are hub centric?

@samcmf majority of aftermarket wheels are gonna be lug centric. Some people swear you get vibrations from. I’ve never had any issues, my methods are wheel/lug centric. But the wheel spacers I’m using have a hub centric back with a wheel/ lug centric face.

should specify in the manufactures specs whether the lug or hub centric. What brand wheels you going with?

i chickened out and paid the restock fee.... i found the exact wheels that came on my truck, the dealership said there is 6 within the company nation wide so i told them to order those wheels. what came stock on this thing was a 16 x7 6 lug x 5.5 +15mm offset 4-1/2" backspacing and 106mm hub bore diameter. its kinda pricey cuz I'm going through the dealership but if it alleviates the alignment issue its worth it to me.

You could find a stock set that someone has taken off their truck for way cheaper on marketplace or something. See them all the time.
