I also run Sumo springs. Yellow in fact. On a stock set up they are really close to the frame, so no way can the axle fully articulate. In my case, my lift leaves about a 2" gap before contact is made, so in my case, the axle articulation is possible. Prior to lift, I had a second set cut down so I could quickly swap them to off road and get traction. So, yeah, I am pretty well aware of the pros and cons of the Sumo Springs.

Close to pulling trigger on the CB +3's, but still worried about spare tire fitment. Can anyone running a 35x12.50 tire with coach builder shackles provide a picture showing how close the shackle is to the tire?

    Thanks!

Bump, still trying to confirm this fitment…..I’m thinking if I deflate the spare it will give me more room on both sides of the shackles. Can anyone running this set up please chime in?

Just go with the ToyTec shackles lol. Looking back, I actually bought the ones from Boss 4x4, but they are identical to the the ToyTec ones. You don't really need that extra 0.25" :D I know the Coachbuilder ones are good too, but there is another option! Plus, you were looking to do new springs too? Typically those come with new bushings already or at least all new bushings are an option. I've been really happy with my Dobinsons leaf pack and the Boss 4x4 "(ToyTec clone) shackles. At the time I used a full new bushing kit from Dobinsons as well.

thanks for the reply, no I already have OME dakar leafs that I recently purchased. I’m leaning towards the Toytec shackle now for more spare tire clearance and running the 1.5” setting. Apparently if you run the 1” setting the shackle rubs on a bed bolt? I won’t be running the 1” setting but that’s a pretty lame design flaw. I currently have OME’s greaseable shackle installed with their yellow poly bushings. I wonder if they would fit Toytec’s shackle…I’m gonna call and ask.

You are correct, the Toytec shackle if set at the 1" (which is where mine are) you should trim the bed bolts. I don't think it is always the case though?? I feel like when they first came out they had square edges, and they have since rounded them off which should help clearance. Either way, I trimmed the bed bolts, only one per side, which was super easy and quick. It is just the nature of the beast since they are adjustable.

And yes hopefully the bushings you already have will work. And that's good you already have the Dakar springs. Good luck!! I don't think you'll be disappointed with these shackles. They don't look as beefy as the CB ones, but being that it's steel over aluminum it doesn't need to be overly thick. Both are great choices.

I have the coach builder +2 and I'm running a 33.4" spare. I'm already closer to the shackles than I prefer and I don't see how a true 35" is fitting under there without interfering. I can see the less bulky shackles working fine.

What tire are you running? I currently have +2 coach builders and have Falken Wildpeak 285/75/18 and wondering what I can do for a spare. The Falken tires measure 34.8".

I had the same issue with the coach builders and 35 inch spare. Took them off and put some total chaos shackles on and good to go.

When I had the CoachBuilder+3 shackles i took some measurements to see if my 35” spare would fit. It would not. I also have the TRD duel exhaust which was also a factor. I replaced the CoachBuilder shackles with Alcan shackles when I replaced my springs. Also put the 35” spare on a DortCom Trail Swing HD.

So I have 285/75/18 tires (34.8" tire) on stock TRD rims and been looking at getting that same tire size on my spare rim. I dropped my spare tire and took some measurements.

Coachbuilder shackle to shackle is only 33 inches
Back of truck (bumper/license plate area) to resonator location for BA midpipe is 33 inches

How have y'all been able to get a larger tire to fit? I don't want to bite the bullet and mount a brand new tire on my spare rim just to find it not be able to fit anymore?

I ended up going with Toytec shackles and my 35x12.50 fits with about a 1/2” on both sides of tire. Cb shackles are thicker but It can still be done but clearance probably looks more like 1/8”-1/4” on both sides (someone correct me if I’m wrong) Apparently there is also more room on the driver’s side IIRC, so you can push the tire more that way. You will definitely have to cut the factory guide tabs. Also, it helps to have your shackle bolts orientated so they are going “out” towards the street, this will give more clearance cause the nut will be out of the way of spare tire.

Can’t speak to fitment with your exhaust. give @Coachbuilder1 or @dirtydeeds a call or maybe they can chime in here.

I've fit a Yokohama Geolandar AT in 285/75/18 on the stock steel spare between coachbuilder +3 shackles. Its a very tight fit and I had to grind the guide tabs on the back off. It wouldn't fit without that since it needs to be pushed toward the axle more. It's been there for a couple months now with no issues—on road and mild off road.

That being said, I don't have a resonator pipe like you mentioned. I also wrapped a part of the tailpipe in heat wrap where it got within 1" of the new spare.

My long term plan is to ditch the shackles and go back to OEM and achieve lift via new leaf springs

Just an update. I found a used 285/70/18 tire on Facebook for $40, got it mounted and balanced for $42 at Discount Tire. Went to raise it into place under the truck and it fits between the coachbuilder shackles, but it is hitting the rear bumper and resonator from DirtyDeeds.

I'm supposed to drive 350 miles this weekend. Is it okay for the spare to rub against the resonator? Any thoughts on a quick solution to get through this trip? Should I buy heat wrap at AdvanceAuto and wrap the resonator? Try to adjust it?

Thank you for everyone's advice and help so far on my spare tire questions!

Thank you for everyone's feedback. I unbolted the DD resonator and shifted it a little forward and up to make space for the tire. Plenty of clearance now.

285/70/18 used Toyo Open Country spare on stock rim
    +2 Coachbuilders shackles
    DD resonator
Removed the tire guides so I guided the tire in place manually as a friend cranked it up.

Passenger side- There is less than 1" of clearance from shackle to tire

I have a Method 701, BFG KO2 315/70/17, my coachbuilder shackles touch my tire. I just got the tires a few days ago and today was the first time I tried to put the spare back up. Can it fit, yes. Do I feel ok leaving the tire back there, No.

I cut the hangers underneath as well and pushed the tire forward as my buddy jacked it up. Drove about 10 miles from his place to mine after we installed it and by the time I got home the tire was touching the CB shackle. If anyone has figured out how to make a big 35 fit under there with these let me know. Id LOVE to keep my spare down under the truck.

yea absolutely. I cut them off with a grinder, pad wheeled it after to make sure it was way up and out of the way. It will NOT fit with CB shackles. Plain and simple theres not enough space for when the shackle and leaf flex and move. I for one don't want to remove my CB shackles as they noticeably improved the ride of my truck, so bed mounted spare tire carrier it is. If I had the skills to fab, id probably have a stab at moving the spare tire hanger thing (dont know what its called) forward about 5-6 inches. The problem is at the back of the tire. Picture a clock, the shackles rub at about where the numbers 4 and 7 would be.

Also, anyone who tells you different and that they will fit is not taking into account the movement of the tire. Can it physically fit up there without touching, yes.

will it move when your truck starts to flex around, yes. Will it end up touching the tire, yes. I even tried w the tire at 40psi and then at 20. Same result.
