What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

I just bought a singer sewing machine a couple weeks ago an taught myself to sew so i could make my own awning bag. Worked out great and i can see having a sewing machine being useful for lots of other little projects down the road. Id like to make some tool bags or something for camping as well.

 

My truck's battery platform (the steel piece, not the plastic tray) was covered with powdered battery acid both on top and underneath. I tried to remove it but couldn't lift it at all even with the 4 bolts removed (2 10mm, 2 12mm), and prying on it would bend the metal instead of getting it to lift off. I think it's rusted on there real tight. So instead of risking bent metal, I vacuumed it up and sprayed a ton of WD40 on and underneath it. Better than nothing... It looks like crap but way better than before.

Also, one of my front breather valves is seized. Gonna have to deal with that. I don't know if that's the diff or the transfer case.

Maybe it is. I assumed not because there is at least 1 bolt there purely to retain it it seems.

 

Pretty sure @DarkMint and my 04 DC are same and mine is indeed tacked in a few places. I’m not in position to remove all and check but I can see some of the tacked places.

One thing he is showing are those 2 hoses with caps and I am now curious what they are because I have same hoses.

 

ALICE radio packs look interesting and have wide strap attachment points. Maybe too tall for AC, close for DC, but, I am trying a german military number that is much shorter and cheap as surplus.

 

I have similar on my '06, I never noticed those until I was cleaning up my VC leaks after finishing the gaskets. Both are breathers from the front 4wd stuff, tcase and diff, or the tcase and trans, or trans and diff, I'd need to go back and look. Pretty sure tcase and diff.

Up till the point you said you sprayed it with WD40, I was going to say you should indiscriminantly spray a rust converter product up in there. WD40 will repel the paint from sticking now it's there.

Throwing a wire bottlebrush on a drill and shoving it up under the metal is a good way to break off the excess rust flakes if you really want to get at it. I'd say use a flex hone, but I don't think it'd get into the right-angles and corners too well.

 

I hate I'm linking to scAmazon's site, you can probably get a similar set at Harbor Freight or Northern Tool if there's one local to you. It'll probably be made from the same factory scAmazon is sourcing theirs from. But a kit like this is a good way to go. Brass is more forgiving on the metal and paint, if it's a concern. If not, steel bristles will strip more aggressively. Leave the round brush-end intact so it's easier to chuck up in the drill, or cut it off shorter and fold it up so it'll chuck nice.

Applied some of my surfboard ding repairs skills to the truck today. Slightly better looking and stronger then the duck tape that was there before.

 

1st gen tundra center console is too round, but maybe a 2nd gen console or some other flat sided, narrow junkyard console would fit.

There is a guy on mud that sews heavy canvas tool bags to match the factory original ones. Made the mistake of going down that rabbit hole and reading through his posts. Pretty interesting stuff if you have the time. He got pretty deep talking about the machines he used and what was good vs not.

I could be way off, but from what I remember it was commercial equipment that's not really made anymore. Also seems like they typically had to be sourced from another country like Vietnam or something. Toyota made sewing machines for some time.

Not Tundra related but still counts in my book. Wife’s 2003 Sequoia Limited was bought with the power folding mirrors not working and bad slop in the mirrors. Previous owner super glued switch at the half way point to keep the motor from running. Well a $40 used ebay switch and a $10 plastic gear and lots of cussing and I got it to work.

Power folding as in, fold in and out for parking purpose? I didn't know that was a thing. I have zero purpose for it but would love that on my truck. Wonder how tough a retrofit is?

 

If you look up “antman” on t4r.org he is the king of bad ass mods, abs he retrofitted power folding mirrors into his 5th gen, someone then stole his idea and started mass producing it. But you might find some good info on his build page.

 

I’ve come across several power folding mirrors in my time searching. They are significantly more expensive. I’ve never had a vehicle with them so I don’t know what I’m missing. Typically when parking on the street it’s easy enough to futz with the driver side by hand. I think real tow mirrors might be a different story but while I do like heated mirrors, I don’t quite get the folding yet.

I also don’t understand why tow mirrors don’t have integrated ditch lights. That seems like such a no brainer.

 

I would’ve loved having power folding mirrors on my tundra. Great to easily pull into most new home garages with only a couple of inches clearance on either side. Also parking on Boston’s narrow city streets where mirrors have been clipped by drivers on multiple occasions.

 

Yes power fold in for parking purposes. Cool feature, but a PIA to fix. I'm not sure why the Tundra isn't the same, but I prefer the mirror switch location in the sequoia which is where that odd little console plug is in front of the drive side cup holder on the Tundra. Both share the same console it's just the Tundra has the weird little hole/plug and the Sequoia has the mirror switch adjustment and power fold switch there. The mirrors are crazy expensive and the plugs are completely different so any retrofit would be fairly work intensive I think.

 

The guy in Canada wants to make me some custom bags so I’ll be doing that I think.

Here’s step one of the tonneau rack. I really don’t recommend this for my style of tonneau, they weren’t made for load bearing. Better to get a backflip and mount your rack to your rails. Next step is to bolt the top down, trim the rear lip, and pull it all off to deal with the failing clear coat.
