I wish I had money to just store away a few low mile trucks & cars.

Vehicles are required to get 40 mpg by 2026. I do not know if this includes all vehicles but I imagine it will kill a lot of models and platforms. I wish I had stupid money to purchase and mothball a few vehicles. I would have a couple for myself in case I wreck my current truck or just to have for retirement. I would then have a couple to re-sell as I imagine they will increase in value.

Many models have always appreciated over years of storage. Nothing new really. You'll always be able to buy a truck in America during your lifetime too. Don't sweat it!

    Hmm. That makes me curious...

So, Toyota only updates their trucks every, like 15 years. The current 3rd gen (2022+) definitely does not get an EPA estimated 40 mpg. Is there going to be some type of new big update by 2026 in order to comply with the 40 mpg 'mandate'?

Farming, ranching, boating, camping, moving, etc. Will all be here long after all us are long gone. Trucks are here to stay a minute.

I agree with you OP. I love my ‘19 Tundra, especially the purring V8 and commute 1000 miles a month just for work. I wish I could afford a small EconoBox car to not kill my truck so fast and save on the cost of gasoline. It’s getting old quick, I’m up to $100 a week now.

Part of my point is that with those MPG requirements the trucks we know and love will probably be GONE or no longer available in just a few years.

I agree with OP, Although, I Wouldn't probably look at them from an investments standpoint. Just would like to have certain other vehicles now before some crazy new restrictions pull power/fun from them. I'm not knocking EV, I took a Porsche Taycan turbo s out for a few launches and its one of the fastest cars I've ever driven.

In the past the mandate was 28 mpg. This is usually for a brand as a whole. As in they need to sell enough cars that get better than 28mpg that it offsets their cars that get less than that. 1/2 ton and up trucks have been excluded from these rules in the past along with certain types of fleet vehicles.

Usually the mpg government mandate applies to a manufacturers average mpg across their whole line.
So if they have several models that get great mpg’s, they can have a couple that get less mpg’s.

i have several old vehicles I wish I would have kept, stored. Sadly they all had lots of miles on them because they were so reliable and fun.

Vehicle manufacturers have already decided to do away with high horse-powered vehicles and are working on those dang electric ones. Then they are doing away with the hellcat motor and going to a high Hp hydrogen vehicle!!! They are claiming more than 800 Hp if I remember correctly.

    Calling it the Hydra!

Then again in 2 1/2 years a lot of this will be wiped away!!!!:)

It's a 40mpg average across their entire lineup. If you ever wondered why the jeep brand started making 4 cylinder shitboxes 20 years ago that's why. The same reason toyota had the worst performing half-ton truck in the mpg department for years and why dodge can sell cars with 700 horsepower.

I think you're going to see a lot more cheap electric cars so they can offset the pickup trucks. The epa usually rates EVs around 100mpg. I think a hybrid drivetrain will become standard equipment too.

Wouldn't be a bad plan if it actually reduced waste and pollution! All it does is generate revenue!

I’ve always understood it to be a fleet average. Sell a pile of hybrids and electrics or cut the feds a big enough check and you get to make some trucks. This new shenanigan could be something different. I don’t care enough to look into it.

Gotta remember , they are only worth what they actually get sold for. And only ones buying anything worth something are the super rich , and if you follow them , they usually turn them around in a few years , and the only ones they keep are really something special , unlike anything made these days. Better off buying older ones already out there and holding them. Just like coins and stamps and baseball cards.

I would be surprised if the average gas mileage requirement doesn't change to less than 40 MPG before 2026.
