I’m considering doing a new exhaust made by Keith at DD. He wants my cats to install in the new system. I asked the local muffler shop and they will not remove cats and install pipe temporarily due to emissions laws.

can I get away with using some flexible exhaust from autozone and just clamps for the temporary time of getting the cats to Keith and getting the fabricated exhaust back?

    I don't see why not.
If you do it, please put up pictures and video of what it sounds/looks like.

Edit: I don't know squat about exhaust tubing I just want to see him do it

It going to be loud and smell awful. Just be prepared for that. Oh, and the obvious thrown codes, rough idle and acceleration, gas mileage, etc. What's DD's turnaround time?

Yea, not gonna be happy. Didnt someone recently confirm it was drivable with dual spacers for the rear sensors?

What about the O2 sensors? Disconnect then and store them temporarily?

I'm not sure that this will work out. I don't know how you would attach those flex tubes. You'll need a 3 bolt flange at the manifold on both sides, and you'll need to turn horizontal corners to meet the Y in drivers side. On the passenger side you have a shorter run to meet the Y. You'll need 2 bolt flanges to join the Y. That pipe is an oddball size as well, pretty close to 2.25

Maybe call Keith and ask him what to do. I would probably leave the truck parked until you can fit the whole new system in.

Please be aware that if it flexes it could leak. If it does leak then exhaust could enter the cabin.

Look up high-temp flue tape. A few wraps could seal it, but broken motor mounts would be an issue.

I thought the sensors were upstream of the cats that make the call on fuel air. I assume I’d get a check engine light and the smell.

it will actually run like crap though?

I thought the downstream sensors didn’t change anything on the ecu* side of things.

keith recommended I get a shop to cut out the cats and temporarily install a pipe in their place. He said the other option would be to park.

my thought was I could cut out the cats myself and put flex pipe in to get by for a couple weeks.
I did not ask him about this thought process but guess I could.

@shoe07 I see, if you cut the cats then yes, you may be able to clamp something in place as a temporary fix, but be cautious of heat escaping.

The O2 are upstream and down stream from the cats. If you're cutting the cats and leaving the bungs then yes, it will throw a code and might run rich.

If you're going to cut the cats out anyway, may as well try it. Worst case you're down a vehicle until you install your kit.

I do have some exhaust wrap from a generator exhaust extension I did. Maybe if I go this route I’ll wrap them to ensure we aren’t damaging anything.

If you cut after the upstream o2 sensors and before the downstream sensors, you possibly will be completely ok. You will have to put anti-foulers in with the downstream sensors. The downstream sensors do not have any influence on fuel trims, so as long as the upstream sensors are present and functioning, I say it won't run like crap. It will throw a "catalyst efficiency below threshold" code unless you put the anti-foulers in, but that code doesn't put the truck into limp mode or anything like that. I say do a decent job sealing everything up and see what happens.

I’m in the midst of installing my long tube headers. Like a fool I didn’t realize I would need extensions for the upstream air fuel sensors. Does anyone have a part number for the correct ones? I’m assuming 24”.

want to make sure I get the right connectors as I hope to finish install tomorrow, then will just wait on connectors
