What do you TOW with your Tundra?

One more question, I see talk about being in s4 and/or s5, what exactly does this mean, standard 4, standard 5? thanks

 

I'm still new to the Tundra but from my understanding S is Sport? mode, when you slide the shifter to the left from D. S4 is what it starts in and you can go up and down from there. S4 I believe locks the converter and gives you lower transmission temps but will cost you MPG when towing at faster speeds due to the higher RPM. I just got my Tundra in November and have only towed our boat from storage to the dealer for winterizing and back so I haven't towed with it much, in a couple months though that'll change, we put a lot of miles on towing during the summer and I'm looking forward to seeing how the Tundra does.

 

I wouldn't overthink it too much, that's a pretty light trailer. My flatbed weighs 2500 empty and I really don't even feel it back there when I'm pulling it around. I wouldn't adjust tire pressure for that low of weight, personally. I like to use tow/haul and put the truck in S and jump around in gears to keep the RPM range ideal.

Example. I put it in S5 on the highway, and I find myself going up a slight incline. The truck doesn't downshift on it's own because the incline is so gradual, but I can tell the truck is working harder than it needs to be. I'll drop down into S4 so it downshifts and keeps the engine in a more optimal RPM range.

Regarding what S mode is, all it does is set the highest gear that the truck will go into. You can be in S4, pull away from a stop light and the truck will be starting out in 1st gear. It'll drive and shift like normal, but won't go any higher than 4th. Same thing applies to S2, S3, etc. I generally keep it in S4 if I'll be under 55mph and then jump into S5 on the highway and downshift as necessary.

 

Thanks, I did not know this. All I did know is that whenever I move the shifter into S mode, and I'm driving around, it always says 4. It's like its default setting or something. I don't know why "S" stands for Sport, that doesn't make any sense to me, it's not a sports car...

That was my old 2012 Tundra, stock suspension. Drove it 200K. I lost the Stop bumps sometimes way before I noticed, the leaf springs took the abuse with stride, towing daily 7000 lb dump trailer and floating equipment. I learned a lot with her. My 2018 will have RAS and for heavy tows, ill use WD hitch.

 

I thought it stood for sequential shift mode. You can move the lever to change the max gear it will go into.

 

Our trailer does not have a slide. The gross vehicle weight rating is 7,000. The last time we towed it, we filled the water tank and it still only weighed in at 5,680 on the trailer axle, 3,320 on the truck's steer axle and 3440 on the drive axle. The Tundra pulls it great! I keep it in tow haul mode and cruise along at 65 mph.

 

Sweet! The one we rented might be a little heavier with a slide and all the stuff my wife needs for a week but I'm thinking to tow it with the tanks empty since we'll have hook ups at the campground.

 

Went for our first camping trip of the season to Lake Wateree State Park SC earlier this week towing a 4900 pound trailer with our 2022 Tundra. This Tundra is going to be a great tow vehicle. Averaged around 14.2 MPG (truck computer) round trip with speeds up to 65MPH on the interstates in 8th gear. Truck has less than 1500 miles, believe fuel economy will get better, will see.

 

Did you ever tow that with a gen 2 Tundra and, if so, what fuel economy did it get?

Towed same trailer and got 12MPG most of the time with our 2016 5.7L SR5 4X4 running in 2WD. Believe once this new engine is fully broken in it should top 15MPG towing this trailer in our area around Charlotte NC. Watching the MPG graphics and found this engine did better (MPG) at 1850 to 1900RPM in 8th gear at 65MPH compared to 1750RPM @ 60MPH in 8th gear on the interstate. Our trailer is aerodynamic, would not expect this MPG with a trailer that has more square corners.

 

What model trailer is this? Thx.

Cross country move from Wa to NJ. I had zero problems on inclines or declines, passing, or braking. Even got cut off by someone “merging” on the freeway in St. Louis, and had to slam on the brakes, got out of there unscathed. Picked up the truck 5 months before the move and my family, dog, and I were comfortable the whole way.
Hoping to pick up some toys and get out there!

I'm guessing the Jeep and trailer are just over 7000 lbs. Tows like a dream.... gas mileage is like a nightmare... LOL

 

Well it took me a bit to get around to getting the pictures up. Took the camper and kayaks out last weekend. First time pulling it with the Tundra, and it's no slouch. And yeah... that gas mileage is brutal @Gainer

Had a blast tho, and the setup with the kayaks worked nicely.

 

Used our “camper” to get both sleds to the mountains. Sled in truck is 10.5’ long and the one in the trailer is damn near 12’. Truck took it like a champ and conversion works out to 13mpg average.

 

Just bought this 2019 keystone hideout 28bhswe. I have Timbrens, trd sway bar, RAS, tekonsha break controller, tow mirrors, 10ply BFG ko2 at 33”, husky WDH and soon to switch it to the Anderson WDH, pro comp 2.5 pro runner front coilovers and soon to add the rear bilstein 5160. Tows great just sucks gas of course.

how much does she weigh?

 

At the moment, we tow nothing more than a dump-run trailer we use frequently around our property for clearing our junk and endless tree debris (we live in a heavily forested area).

But trying to decide if we want to buy a big trailer for camping and how big we want to get. Our 3.5 acres is very hilly and our driveway slope is 13.5 degrees. Down by the house, even the truck with no trailer doesn’t have enough turn around space without a three point turn. So I’m thinking I can’t really keep a big trailer here.

Might get a compromise. I’d prefer a 28 footer or so but maybe an 18 footer would be more pragmatic here.

In the meantime I’ll just leave this photo here. The best Tundra-towing porn of all time.
