My 2000AC has a fiberglass/composite skid plate. It doesn't rust but the gel coat has worn off over the years and the fibers can get itchy if I rub it on my arms unbolting it.

@Sirfive - get a Toyota spring clamp for the radiator hose. Better clamping power than those helical screw clamps.

i asked grandpa what brand gel coat repair stuff we used on his motorhome, will tag you when i get a reply. But what about hitting it with a few coats of underbody rubber paint or truck bed liner paint?

Well not today, but my brake light came on Saturday and Sunday. I thought this was odd considering I had them bled not long ago, but turns out I had a small leak on the driver-side where the hardline connects to the soft line. No noticeable leak until I pumped the brakes and lost most of my brake reservoir. Cleaned it of dirt/mud/etc. gave it a good turn to tighten it up and seems to be dry and holding. Topped it off with some brake fluid today, and so far so good.
I'm assuming that even though there was a small leak, there was enough pressure that no air got into the system. Anyone have any thoughts? I'm not sure if I need to re-bleed the brakes or not.

marine coat one. From amazhan. Fixed some deep scratches from miscalculating a corner and dragging the side of an RV against concrete. I thought it turned out pretty good.

I think one of my wheel bearings is on the way out. Got a slight whub, whub, whub sound coming from the front end when I slow down and coast.

Are these a PIA to do? Can I put it off till spring/ summer if it's just starting now?

I figured that. Question is how long can I go before having to fix it?

I thought for wheel bearings, you jack it up and rotate each tire by hand feeling for excessive resistance, noise and vibration?

Maybe the worn inside edge of the tire is causing it instead? Right now I need an alignment since it shakes and pulls right at 65 mph+.

Edit: I'll give the wiggle test a shot. I thought that was primarily for bad ball joints and tie rods.

Until it comes apart on its own.

But seriously they'll usually make since gnarly grinding noises when it's really bad, obviously sooner is better for replacement.

It also likes to press the brake caliper cylinders back into the caliper. If bad enough you start needing to pump the brakes to actually stop. It can get worse and have the rotor grinding on the caliper/bracket (depending on design, for us it'd be the caliper).

My drivers front has been on the way out for at least a year. Noisy, but zero play. And yes, it looks like a huge PIA to swap. Not a bolt in like most these days. Requires a 20 ton press and a variety of odd adapters / random metal bits to get the 5 stages of pressing the old out and the new in. Hence my delay in fixing…..

I can't even imagine what the dealer would cost to replace one and it's not a job that I would trust many other shops with. I bet the dealer charges at least 4 hours labor.

You can get by for a while. I rode around with bad bearings for a good while.

It is really a pita. I recalled back in thebTS days a few guys tried with 20 ton press and their press got laughed at.

In my case I didn't wanna pay anybody the labor to pull the spindles, I only wanted to pay for what I couldn't do. Toyota wouldn't play that and Toyota wouldn't touch my truck(aftermarket upper arms). They did give me the number for the shop they outsource these to but it was too far.

I found a shop that was willing to do the press work on each spindle for $200. I brought them loose spindles and replacement parts, next day I picked them up. They told me they've done that job lots of times. If you don't have any luck with calling mechanic shops, maybe check a few machine shops. They're probably better suited to this sort of thing if you're bringing in loose parts.

Apparently the 20t failed. Maybe their press needed maintenance but that told me its better off letting a shop do the pressing. Besides I lived in an apartment and didn't have a press.

I’ve got a 12ton press. Not even gonna attempt this. I want to pull the spindles both sides and take them to a shop. All the shops are gone. My dad had a hell of a time finding a radiator shop. Only one was still open in town. Toyota dealership service dept. Never even called me back for a quote, I imagine they would have told me to kick rocks unless they got to do all the breakdown work and use their parts anyway. The search continues, so hard to trust anyone these days.

What size of a press is required if a 20tee gets laughed at, is a 50t what shops usually have?

That's what the dealership near me did. They won't do it on loose parts even if I buy the bearings from them. Liability they said, not sure how that works. I think its more a matter of they don't do it in house and won't make money off it.

Damn. Even better news. I'll have to try the same place that pressed in my shock bushing. They had a 20-50 ton press, IIRC.

They were a spring shop for HD construction and trailer trucks. I've got one a couples miles away, but they won't help me out unfortunately.

So I can't buy the Harbor Freight 20 ton press and get this done? That was my initial plan.

This is what I did. Shop charged me $250 and didn't seem happy about having to do it. Hardest part was getting my UBJs out and tie rod ends not wanting to loosen so I cut em off. I went ahead and replaced the hubs to cause fuck it. You'll need a 1/2 drive torque wrench for your axle nut.

I also asked toyota about bringing my rear axles to them to press my bearings and they also said they need the truck there. And $1100. No thanks, I'll do it myself........later.

I think you can. You just have to make sure it's 100% lined up right so it doesn't bind. And a good assortment of plates/ old brake rotors/random steel plates for the awkwardness off the spindle.
