Does anyone know if the Crewmax TRD Sport 4x4 is available with the 6.5 ft bed?

Perhaps my recollection is incorrect. Maybe every mph above 60mph equates to a 1mpg loss? Anyway, the point I'm failing at trying to make is there is apparently a speed at which above it the decrease in fuel efficiency increases significantly. That's why I simply don't agree with Sammy Hagar and can drive 55.

There's no perfect formula for how many mpg's you'll lose over 60mph. Depends on a number of factors, like gearing, aerodynamics, engine setup etc. But you are correct that aerodynamic drag really starts to kick in around 60mph and it will take significantly more energy to increase and maintain 60mph or greater. That's why during the oil embargo in the 70's the speed limit was set at 55mph. Safety would be a secondary factor for those speeds, but fuel efficiency was number one.

If you watch the video he discloses that he passed through a few towns where he had to slow down to 40 or 25 mph and was not doing 70 the entire route - so not all highway speeds and not stop and go traffic but promising nonetheless

I seriously doubt it's a linear scale anyway. I'm sure the mpg drops much faster with a smaller and smaller increase in speed once you get above a certain speed, especially with the size and shape of a pickup.

Yes, most modern day vehicles are designed to be most efficient at 55-60 mph since that is common highway speed. There's tons of studies out there about it and while every engine is slightly different and has its own nuances, they all have the same relative efficiency graphs.

You can’t really apply a catch-all formula to highway efficiency. The aero resistance, rolling resistance, driveline friction, and engine operating efficiency at any given speed can be hugely different from on brand truck to another (even same model with different powertrains). I’d be really curious to see 70 mph vs 80 mph highway cruising mpg.

Looks like it might, but I'm sure they'll factor that in to the finished product.

Yeah, it's exponential. The formula for velocity vs weight vs frontal area is about three sentences long.

Just spoke with my dealer in Canada who had the training course on the TRD Pro today, he stated the combined fuel economy is 11.2L/100km or 21mpg-ish.

Might be better on the regular hybrids that arent lifted, have more highway oriented smaller tires, have the air dam, etc etc

Pretty low, yeah. Still, my combined is around 14. That’s a 50% increase from the v8. Decent when you look at it that way, but it would still be trailing the pack.

With the power that hybrid drivetrain is rated at, I’d love to see a heavy duty payload package as an option. 600 lb ft of torque and 2k lbs of payload would be awesome.

Yeah kinda sucks but around what I expected for the TRD Pro, the other hybrids I assume will net 23mpg combined which is pretty much what the powerboost does.

Pfft. Toyota needs to step it up on the ad front. I had a Nissan Frontier ad pop up on youtube the other day. The truck was towing an ATV on a trailer up a mountain road and passes a group of cyclists. The driver gives them a smug look as he goes by and rock music was playing throughout the ad. I actually went and looked at the Nissan Frontier website.
