Even with that said, doesn’t the bed of this Tundra look like it’s has a weird bend to it? Or is it just the lighting…

    No BS or hidden fees.

If I go the F150 route when my lease is up, it will be worth the drive and I'm all the way in Utah. Still leading tundra though!

Well the marketing people certainly think you can tow a 5er/GN....

Read the fine print. Probably says "do not attempt", "do not try to replicate", or "Toyota does not encourage or recommend the use of fifth wheel type trailers with this product". Kind of like when they show trucks driving on a dirt road.

I posted this in jest, its another example of marketing vs engineering reality. However based on this ad, a GN hitch does exist for the 3rd gen, which is relevant to this thread.

Since you mentioned it, I retyped the fine print below. Its not as strongly worded as it probably should be.

"Professional drivers on a closed course. Do no attempt. Never tow beyond a vehicle's published towing capacities. See Owner's Manual for limitations. Off-roading is inherently dangerous. Abusive use may result in bodily harm or vehicle damage. Wear seatbelts at all times and do not allow passengers in cargo area."

So I looked up that machine to call BS on Toyota. My guess is that its a Pistenbully 100. Weighs roughly 8500lbs. Trailer is probably 3000 with GN. So total 11,500 so right at the Max towing for a Limited 4x4 (slightly over). Take a 15% GN pin weight and you are at 1725. You would 100% completely maxed out before you even step in the vehicle. Gotta love marketing.

I am sure someone will say just add air bags you'll be fine

I thought 15% was for a bumper pull trailer and pin and 5th wheels were 20-25%.

I will say this, at least they didn't put wood blocks between the springs and frame to prevent the truck from squatting in the picture.

Yes GN I think is 19% and 5th wheel is in the 20%-25%. I picked 15% because it match with total payload. Ultimately saying this setup was BS. Also why would you tow a snow machine up a snowy mountain. If anything you would put the tundra on the trailer and let the machine pull it

If that's just a picture and not a still from a TV commercial, a GN hitch doesn't even need to exist for the Tundra.

I'm willing to bet the truck they used has the air suspension on it. It's sitting very level....like perfectly level.

It is a still from a TV commercial, so no photoshop needed. It looks legit, as in not CGI or some other TV magic. I saw the ad on TV while getting lunch and was like "no way they are towing a GN in a commercial". Got back to the office and went straight to Youtube. Skip to ~0:21

I can't tell on my tiny phone screen if it's CGI or not but I wouldn't necessarily bet my life that it isn't.

the Winnebago MicroMinnie 5th wheel was a great option for half tons but I think they made 5 of them before they stopped. Not sure why, but I have been trying to find one for the last 3 years and havent even seen a used one pop up.

The SAE J2807 towing standard says 10% for bumper and 15% for gooseneck and 5th wheels when doing the towing calculations.

Common knowledge for RV’s seems to be 12-15% for bumper and 20% for 5ths

Towing a 5th wheel trailer with a 1/2 ton. Not impossible.
Back in the mid 90's there where more then one manufacture making 5th wheel trailer for 1/2 ton trucks.
    Mine was a Fleetwood 21' Wilderness 5th wheel, I pulled it with a 1996 GMC 1/2 ton 4x4 with no problem's.
Hitch weight loaded was 600lbs, which included the 5th wheel hitch.
Trailer dry weight : 4000 lbs with 1,590 carry capacity.

I drove this in the mountains many times and to the ocean. put over 1,000 miles on it, before I sold the truck and trailer together.

I have a smaller fifth wheel and I contacted pullrite to see if they had a mounting kit for my superglide fifth wheel hitch . They told me the #4421 universal kit would work. However, my hitch installer came over to install the rail kit and unfortunately pullrite hadn’t done they’re homework. The mounting kit wasn’t even close, the bed on the 22 sits a lot higher from the frame than the previous generation tundra. Still waiting on when pullrite will come up with a new version of their mounting kit. Also, called checked with airlift and Firestone to see if they had airbags for the rear end, and there’s nothing out yet, and won’t be for six months to a year. Not what I wanted to hear. There’s just not a lot of after market parts out there for the new tundra yet.

I kinda like the 7’ one. Its less aerodynamic drag and it makes it easier to get into boondocking sites.

my current trailer is a 24’ total length, 8’ wide Jayco and I have a hard time getting that into some boondocking spots sometimes. Especially with a Supercrew 6.5’ bed F150 steering. There has been a few occasions where ive had to use 4Lo to get in lol.

So lots of folks have said you can't pull 5th wheel with half ton unless its really small. Escape 5.0 is going to be my next camper (currently in a popup). 3500 pound dry weight. Legit half-ton capable. Probably that and the scamp 5th wheel are the only ones that I would tow with a half ton. The question is, can you put a 5th wheel hitch in the composite bed??

Yes, a hitch can be installed in a composite bed. We just dont have a 'frame kit' available for 22' tundra yet.

You're smart to ask before you buy the 2022 Tundra. We bought ours hoping to pull a lightweight fifth wheel, but every place I checked with is telling me that they have nothing compatible with the 2022 Tundra.

Just because it’s a 5th wheel or gooseneck hitch, doesn’t mean you are pulling over max weight/payload.. anyone that has hauled gooseneck knows it 100% nicer to pull the conventional tag style… I know in Nova Scotia, personal vehicles are being stopped by DOT and checking weights all the time on 1/2 tons and 2500’s and fine them for being over weight. Seen them make them unhook and called for tow truck to haul their trailer away. And god forbid you get in an accident and police do their investigation and insurance does theirs and figures out you were over weight with trailer, occupancy, and cargo… they don’t pay, my buddy just went through this. $85000 diesel and $75000 camper.. added in his line of credit and claimed bankruptcy..

My truck is registered as personal vehicle and I get pulled into scales every so often with my dump trailer on for weight and inspection.

All that aside.. as soon as BW makes the hitch available I’m getting it!
