DIY pop and lock for a fraction of the cost

Yep I'm on my 2nd metal bracket on mine. Need to find something stronger.

 

I found the bracket shakes from the unlocking. I secured mine with a zip tie to the inside tailgate frame and it stopped the moving.

 

did you ever buy a replacement? Message me I have an entire tailgate handle assembly

 

actually I did. sucks to have an extra key but oh well. serves me right thinking I don't need glasses

 

you should be able to reuse the original cylinder.

and if not, at least you can leave the tailgate key in the console, since you now have a power locking one.

Like the picture taken from this thread below of what is I assume is a 2017.. I am wondering what color are the correct wires for a 2016 Tundra double cab TRD Off Road ? I am trying to find the front passenger door lock wire pair color code for a tailgate remote release DIY install. YouTube vids for the the later years show a white w/silver and a red being used but my 2016 has no red wire. I think it might be one of the blue wires. I tried testing with a 12v light bulb on those pairs to se if a pulse would light it up. Also a voltmeter but no cigar. I am wondering if this is a fast square wave pulse with an opposite polarity for the other action that is too fast for the 12v incandescent taillight bulb I am using for the test.
Anyway I sure could use a hand finding the schematic with wire colors for the lower blue connector in the front passenger door pillar.

Thanks. that's what I was thinking...So pins 2 and 12 on that M1 blue conn. (found this in those wiring diagrams by searching for 'door lock' ) I was prewiring while waiting for the actuator so I was trying to test and wondering what the signal looks like. Must be polarity switching to send the solenoid the other way.

 

Hi all, bumping this thread back up. I recently installed my DIY remote tailgate lock thanks to everyone here.

Toyota wanted $250CAD for the part, and the pop lock kit on Amazon was around the same. I ended up spending $40CAD in parts, and about an hour this evening putting it all together. I added an extension on the lock actuator mechanism, and a quick disconnect incase I ever need to remove the tailgate. I also used a rubber washer under the 10mm bolt holding the actuator. Its not too loud, but louder than the other door locks.

This was on a 2021, the blue wire on the actuator went to the red in the truck, and the green/white goes to the white in the truck.

 

Done. This is a six pack job. Hardest part was definitely getting the supplied bracket in the proper shape/angle to allow for smooth operation. My main issue was the actuator not extending the latch far enough forward (unlock position), not allowing the handle to pull the tailgate side latches properly. Lot of back and forth there. But I had four beers left at this point, so I was in good shape.

Used the screw method in post 38.
Confirmed the wiring in post 79 is proper for the 2011.

I had a pop and lock unit go bad and needed to replace it.
I used DEIs switch same as you.
This wasnt too bad to install after studying the positions shown in your photos.
The most difficult installation problem was starting that 10mm bolt under the hand bent bracket.
But I eventually got it.
