Here’s what those lights are indicating: weight. Yes, weight. Ford has a system they introduced earlier this year called Onboard Scales. It weighs how much is being loaded into the truck and then displays that as a little four-part graph in the taillights, based on the truck’s payload capacity, so you can see easily how much more you can load, right there by the back of the truck. No outside scales necessary.

    Too many, but not enough....
another thing to help them deny your warranty claim because you went over payload 1 time by 5 lbs. Thanks tech!

I watched a youtube video a few months ago saying it would weigh payload but they never said how it would read it. I figured something in the head unit or center cluster. Nice little feature though. Just adding $$ to the overall.

I don't think I'd ever care for it, but I don't use my trucks other than personal use.

It is an idiot light for loading the bed.

If it indicates the truck is overloaded a little bit will it have to be unloaded to correct payload before the truck can be operated?

    Although it's cool:

    - More tech to be unreliable
    - What happens with aftermarket tail lights?
    - If I'm over capacity, I probably know already
    - if makes the truck look fragile . . . kinda like "ok, ok, that's enough weight now--ok, you can stop now" (just weird personal opinion)

Also can be used to indicate when you plan on completing a turn - if only some drivers realized THAT feature.

Gimmicky and not really useful to me - give me something I can use like a roll down tea window…not a built in scale. Again - it’s a HALF TON truck - how hard is it to calculate 1k pounds of payload ? Most people overload them to begin with the few times they carry cargo.

My question is this - does it record (anywhere at all) what it registers?

    If so, forget it.

I would not worry about warranty denial with it. It took Ford two years to figure out that people were blowing up the 6.0 liters with programmers.

I hope that someone over at one of those Ford Forums is smart enough to locate the receiver/transmitter, and wrap it with some tin foil. That's what we would do. :tinfoilhat: :)

That’s a good way to prevent overload damage. Until someone undoes the fuse
