VLAND LED Headlights with Sequential Turn Signal (2015)

I know there's posts scattered around about the VLAND LED headlights, but I wanted to share my experience here instead of hijacking someone else's thread. I have a 2015 (all halogen), but was running 2015 TRD Pro headlights with VLED V6 Triton switchbacks and VLED Microevolution LED headlight bulbs.

Based my decision on some of the random posts on these lights as well as a couple posts by @memario1214 (here & here) stating that VLAND is basically Alpharex. I ended up buying them on Amazon instead of the manufacturer due to some shipping questions

You're all probably wondering why I didn't go OEM LED - I live in Hawai'i and it's rare to find factory take-off's. Ordering OEM's would've costed me double due to shipping, even through my local dealership. If I find OEM LED's, I'll probably pick them up. These were my next "best" option without spending $1,500 on lights

Received them yesterday and gave them a thorough observation. Nothing questionable about the seals, wiring, fit, and finish. My only complaint was the directions provided, but once you start installing, it's fairly obvious which harness to use (comes with 2) and where the "extra" plugs go. All the VLAND connectors were solid with the factory harness. The only "mod" I added was a zip tie on the headlight plug so it wouldn't come disconnected/undone over time.

* edit: I have one complaint. I realized that I seemed to have lost the headlight leveling function. I'm gonna play around with it and see if I can figure it out.

I also did the grey-wire mod & depinned the purple wire on the factory turn signal connector (here & here). Since the VLAND lights use the LED "tube" around the lights as the DRL, having my VLED Tritons as a DRL seemed like overkill. I also read on the linked threads above that the 3157 halogen bulb gets too hot and melts the housing when it's run in DRL mode. My solution was to remove the "factory" configured turn signal DRL feature and use the turn signal as only a turn signal (doesn't come on in DRL mode, parking light mode, lights on mode). These 2 mods seemed to do the trick. Although, since I removed the VLED Tritons - since I effectively removed the usefulness of the switchbacks - and replaced it with the 3157 (since it's only turn signal), I'll probably go back and replace it with an LED bulb and reuse the VLED VLR6 resistors for the hyperflash.

Anyway, sorry for the novel, here's some pictures I tried to take with my iPhone. I realized the LED tube doesn't look as smooth as the OEM LED tube, but I guess that's the trade for the sequential turn signal.

for reference, here's how they looked with my VLED V6 Triton switchbacks running as DRL's. they don't look terrible, but a little "busy". also, the wiring behind the light was literal fricken spaghetti with the VLAND harness, VLED harness, and factory harness.

I can’t remember what stock halogens were like, but the VLAND’s are not as bright as the VLED Microevolution bulbs in the Pro housings I had. VLAND seems is bright though, and I think it’ll get better when I aim the lights correctly.

but naked eye test, not as bright as my previous setup - but not sure how it compares to halogen.

 

yeah, I can do that. I'm gonna disable my fog lights (I did the mod where the fogs are always on as soon as parking lights go on) so they don't drown out the headlight low beams. the low beams aren't that bad. I think what I notice is that the light is more dispersed rather than focused, if that makes sense. hopefully our comparison will give us some better evidence.

mahalo for the tip on the SS3's. I'm actually not really sure how they're supposed to be aimed. Initially when I swapped the lenses from the SAE fogs, they were aimed higher but I thought that was blinding for oncoming traffic so pushed it lower.

 

OP, you mentioned VLAND are basically Alpharex? based on your pictures, i noticed that VLAND the clear lenses for the DRL just like OEM and seem way brighter and can be seen in broad daylight. I have the Alpharex and my DRL lens looks like an opaque milky white color. DRL and sequential can barely be seen in broad daylight.

I think @memario1214 might have more info. I've seen other pics of Alpharex where the lights look like the VLAND's I have. how old are your lights? I wonder if they changed up components at some point

 

i have already talked to him and he has given me awesome advice! I got mine about a week ago, but then again, i do not know when it was manufactured.

 

Thanks for all the info here. It helped quite a bit to sort things out. I just installed the vlands on my 2018 SR5. I used the wire harness witth the additional wire going into the fuse box for the DRL ( 2014 spec ). I didnt change my fog lamps and just popped Sealight LED's in. Lets see how much this improves visibility compared to the mediocre OEM headlight output at night.
