Our previous dog could not be let off leash, she'd follow her nose 1,000 miles and never look back. On the other hand, Coondog has earned her freedom whether in the woods or around the home helping me with yard work. She'll explore but stays within earshot, and comes when called. Unless on city sidewalks or crowded public places, she pretty much stays off leash. I find it very much a pleasure to have a dog that can hang with me without being tethered to me.

That's awesome. We had a Shepard mix that had the run in her. She got off the leash from me once and if it were not for a fence in someone elses yard she would have been gone. Last time I was able to run like that also! That's always my greatest fear, they get away from me and ignore me calling them back. Don't even know how to test those waters cause I don't want to take the chance.

That's how it was with our other dog.

Spent a lot of time with Coondog starting from just a few weeks old teaching her to stay and come when called. She's real smart and learned quickly. Our previous dog was smart too but it didn't matter. Off leash she would wander away and not come when called. Some folks use shock collars and maybe we should have done that to try to allow her some freedom off leash... I don't know.

Coondog is horrible when leashed with just her collar. She'll choke herself pulling. We got a so-called 'pinch' collar that solved it. She won't even try to pull. It looks medieval. I initially thought no way was I putting that on my dog. I wrapped it around my arm and pulled on it and discovered that it was uncomfortable, not damaging. We use it when in public like in the Gatlinburg pic earlier in the thread.

We use those pinch collars on our dogs, never hear a wimper out of them if we had to give a tug. The funny thing is when they hear it jingle they get excited, they know it's time for a walk or a ride !

We’ve used the same on our dogs. Our one lab really can’t stand not to be out in front and without the pinch collar will choke herself on the leash.

We also have shock collars for them that will use the “pager” function on (vibrate, no shock) when walking them off leash if they start getting too curious and not staying close. But it’s pretty rare I’ve got to hit the buzzer any more.

The one recommended to us was Sprenger made in Germany. See tag below. It works.

The one in the above Amazon link doesn't appear to have a swivel at the leash attachment point, and my guess is that the reason there are rubber thingies on the prongs is because they were not properly finished smooth.

There are some tricks and guidelines to using them. We had a trainer that we sent our dogs to and they showed us how to use them. While the dog will eventually figure out not to keep pulling because of how the collar feels when tightening (is sort of like a choke collar but can only collapse by a small amount), the way we were down was to use a firm, quick tug and then release. If the dog starts to pull, quick snap/tug, then release. If they don’t listen, do another one. Pretty quick they figure it out.

    ^^^^

Coondog quickly figured it out. No more pulling.

Oh, and that reminds me of when we purchased a 'harness'. All that did is allow the dog to pull harder.

We bought a harness for our dog because his head is narrower than his neck so he could pull backwards and slip his collar.

Yep. Same here. 85# lab with a full harness gave her the pulling power of a small draft horse.

Thanks. She returns the happiness 10x.

Coondog was a cutie when little. Even then she was telling us what she thought of a leash. haha

I use Herm Sprenger pinch collars and Dogtra E collars

They totally change how the dogs behave on and off leash

No collars at home unless we have guests coming over and they'll get just the ecollars

Harnesses in the truck to buckle in because dogs need seatbelts too

I see this thread has been going forever, so it's apparently obligatory we post photos of our mutts.

Shadow is a Pyranees / Aussie Shepherd mix, about 18 months old. She's our guard dog. Here are a couple of photos of her keeping us safe at our camp site. ;)

    Keeping us safe 18 months.jpg Keeping us safe 18 months - 2.jpg

Here's a photo from the front.

    Lying down.jpg

This is the reason we had to have her. My wife laid eyes on her and announced "We're keeping this puppy."

Littlest one (who thinks she’s in charge of the bigger dogs) turned 3 today. Took her to the soccer game where she was the center of attention, walk around the park, napped with me, and then her birthday party lol

Got the raised bed up to the new house. Honey took right to it, she seems to have remembered being on it when she was little.
    upload_2021-10-3_9-38-23.png

2 hours later it was thoroughly shredded...I think the bedding was weakened from exposure and they exploited it.
