New Diesel for Dodge / Why not Toyota

A friend just bought a 21 Dodge pick up a few weeks ago. Not much to look at; white, not much trim but, he purchased it with a diesel. Not a Cummins though, some Japanese brand I never heard of.
Six cylinder with some kind of ECO run design. He couldn't tell me more but, he's getting 32 mpg in that thing and he says it's got a ton of torque right off idle.
Why doesn't Toyota offer us a diesel option? There are Diesel engine manufactures all over the place so it isn't like re-inventing the wheel.

 

Toyota has said they have no intention of doing a diesel in the US because of the emissions standards. EGRs, DEF, and the like have hammered diesel reliability. The days of the trouble free 500K mile diesels are a thing of the past. Especially in a daily driver with a bunch of short trips. That shit's hard on any diesel, and worse on the new ones.

 

This ^^^. Toyota's #1 asset is their reputation for reliability. They're not going to chance that one iota here in The States on a fools mission.

 

The Ecodiesel V6 is an Italian design, given that RAM is now a part of Stellantis, formerly known as Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. Maybe the Japanese brand he's talking about is the Aisin transmission.

ya said it all! I feel like the diesel emission laws in the US only support big 3 trucks with horrible reliability so that they can sell more.

 

I agree, what good is 32mpg when your italian owned dodge is in the shop half its life.

 

Yep, exactly.
Buddy has a 2014 Ram ecodiesel, he's on his 2nd engine and is back in the shop this week getting the full EGR system replaced for the 3rd time.

 

A coworker of mine had one of those eco-diesel‘s. Let’s just say he only had it for about six months. Didn’t really give him any problems but he was not impressed. Also the re-gen would just take all the fun out of it at times. Slow turd. I didn’t ask him much about it, because I wasn’t interested LOL

 

I'm sure they would, just like any of us. They won't get that either. Big diesels are having issues with them, too. At work the DEF trucks ALWAYS had more issues than the older ones. One truck was on it's 4th or 5th EGR system in 2.5 years and less than 100K miles. The best performing one that had DEF in it was on it's 3rd EGR sensor/setup after 120K miles. Trouble free diesels are a thing of the past.

 

I'm curious to see how things shake out with the 3rd gen eco-diesel reliability wise. It was a pretty substantial overhaul. I looked pretty hard at them before going with my Tundra. Safer bet in crazy market.

 

He did make it sound like his went into re-gen mode quite often (once a tank-ish). It was a daily driver and he only lived a few miles from work. He said he liked it best out on the highway.

 

The only 1/2 ton diesel argument that has made any sense to me is for remote mines and worksites so they only need to fly in (winter truck in) diesel fuel. Nice way to save some money not having to send up a second fuel, and managers don't need HD trucks just to drive around in

 

Same with a buddy of mine. 2 engines, multiple times in the shop. He is a Dodge guy and went back to the 2500 Cummins.

 

I imagine that most Americans that will buy diesel want big block diesels not half ton or taco diesels. Why bother

LOL the Chevy 2.7L I-4 makes 420lb-ft of torque now. So the basic bitch Silverado makes more torque than a 2021 Tundra with the 5.7L V8.

Yeah, and the Chevy engine I-4 will only last half as long, if you're lucky.

 

Most people who buy new trucks and trade in every 3-5 years could care less.

 

No only sell more but repair more. The big $$$ is in repairs.....

This is where the Toyota reliability only attracts to the minority. I know way too many people who buy a new car right around 100k miles because "I better sell this thing before it starts costing me money". I love asking them if a new car will cost less than keeping their car alive. They don't care how long a car will last, they just want to do oil changes and car washes and nothing more.

Dodge seems to be the opposite end. They sell cars with cartoonish amounts of power but they are doomed to early death. Those same people who dump cars before 100k miles don't care a bit.
