Cartridge oil filter drain - there is a better way

Well folks, I just completed my first oil change on the ol' 5.7, she was freshly serviced when I bought her used last fall, and I don't put too many miles on. I've done many oil changes during my 15 years as Commercial Truck Tech, most of them 40-45 litres at a time, and don't usually make much mess. Well, tonight I had my first experience with the Toyota cartridge drain system and the wonderful plastic drain nipple. Oil was running off both elbows and I still couldn't get the damn thing to clip in before it was drained, and I was oily and frustrated.

In my usual way of thinking "There HAS to be a better way", I went looking for a solution. And a solution I did find.

I ended up ordering the top one from a vendor in the UK, since the shipped price to Canada was the best. I fully expect to leave the "skid pan" in place next oil change.

Yup; that's a great tool. I've been using mine since I did my first oil change at 10k. I bought mine off Amazon.

 

I did my first oil change a month ago and agree it was a major PITA! I didn't have any trouble with the plastic drain clip but dropping the skid plate sure was a bitch.

You say you fully expect to leave the "skid pan" in place next time - May I ask how you plan to remove the cover of the filter and replace the cartridge inside?

 

My '08 has an opening in the skid pan directly under the filter cap that's just big enough, so no issue reaching up through to drain with the new tool, or remove the filter and cap using the filter socket and long extension. Not sure if 3rd gens have that hole? It looks factory on mine, but then I'm not even sure there.

 

I've seen a photo of @Spvrtan using his. I just now ordered me one off Amazon and the fumuto drain valve. Oil change time in the next 800 miles

I just watched a youtube video on the filter change, what a pain in the ass. Quick filter housing drain and the filter wrench OR a complete filter re-location kit is going to be a must. Is there a filter re-location kit out there for the 5.7? Found them for the small V8.

 

Found this and calling the supplier. Im now looking for a spin on filter plate that can be mounted in a handy spot someplace up on the inside of the frame. With all of the additional in and out oil hose that will be required to remotely mount a spin on filter you will have trial and error determine how much more oil you will need to add to the system. My old taco's remote filter lines acted like an oil cooler under the truck and it was nice to carry an additional 2 quarts of oil in the system. Stayed cleaner longer and oil was cooled going through the lines.

Im looking for a spot as close to the engine as possible to reduce loosing as much as oil pressure as possible that is coming out of the engine through the filter housing. A small H filter will be just fine i think but I pictured the larger 6" filter plate thats available as well, might be ok too. Will do a little more R&D

These plates will mount right to the inside of frame

 

No more skid plate removal and jacking around on oil changes!!

Lay under the truck, put your drain pan under the filter, screw off the old one, let the lines drain, and screw on a new filter.

Will probably take at least 2 more quarts of oil in the system for your did stick to read correctly and to fill the lines.

When I did this to my Tacos I made sure that the to and from oil lines had a little bit of "down hill" slope as much as possible from the engine to the filter bracket so that the oil in those lines would both also drain out when I removed the filter.

 

Is this just the relocation bracket?

 

Yes. Its where you can use a screw on type oil filter. You will need the adapter to go on the engine and two oil lines to and from this bracket

 

A pic and dimension of opening would be awesome! My 2nd gen 2013 does not have one.

 

I made my own for my 72 Scout. Made a Plate that bolted to the block and I went with L and L Products Relocation Bracket. I wish I could do the same with the Tundra...

On second look, it does appear to have been hand cut, probably with an air body saw. Oh well, it has no sharp edges, and saves me the bother of cutting my own.

This should work. It doesn't tell which one we need for the 5.7 tundra. $200 is less than I paid for my skidplate. Wish I'd have thought of this.

 

Just started reading up on this as I am done with paying someone else to do my oil change only to have oil spilled all over my RCI skid plates.

I'm looking at getting a fumoto valve for the drain port but I stumbled upon your post. (and I apologize if this is a dumb question but I'm learning and I want to make sure that I understand this) Is this so that I can have an external filter instead of the cartridge filter? What did you end up using? Do we have enough clearance for a canister?

 

I just keep the little plastic drain tool that comes with the filters. Go to hard ware store and get a couple feet of 3/4" hose for $2. Insert that on the drain tool and insert into the bottom of the oil filter cartridge and no mess. Exact same thing as above.

As far as the drain plug goes on my 19 there is sort of a recessed opening and the skid plate does not get in the way nor does it have to be removed to drain the oil with no mess. Easy peasy nice and easy.

with that being said, I have an RCI skid sitting in the garage and will be installed this week when I do my 25k maintenance.

 

I can't ever get the plastic drain plug to clip into place. I agree, kinda sucks big time. Just like the upcoming weather....

 

I've go the RCI skid plates on already and the little door is too little for me which is why I want the Fumoto on it. And the more I research it, the more I want the BP Adapter so I can put an external canister style filter on.
