I have a 2018 tundra sr5 and I upgraded the radio to the Kenwood DMX7706S. Apple CarPlay always worked great up until a week ago. It connects through usb and apple CarPlay comes up but it’s disconnects every so often. Sometimes it’ll disconnect every few minutes or it can not go out at all and it’s getting very frustrating. I even purchase a carlinkit wireless CarPlay adapter and it still does it. I have already erased and reconnected phone from radio. Does anyone know what it can be? Thanks for the help in advance.

Try the simple, obvious and cheap things first if you have not already. Clean out the USB ports (male and female sides) as well as the lightning connections with compressed air, maybe try a new cable as the wires or pins could be damaged, update your iPhone operating system if it needs it, check for updates to the head unit by contacting Kenwood.

Not sure if it is related at all, but ever since I updated to iOS 14.6, connecting has been more involved. Hard to describe (and not exactly what you are experiencing, so I won't go into detail), but it might be relevant to you?

There should be a firmware update for headunit. My 996xr was having issues after I updated my iOS. After the firmware update on the headunit it has been issue free

Try using an actual Apple usb cable not a knock off.

I was thinking the same thing. I feel with my last update that’s when it happened. It so happens I just got notification for iOS update 14.7 let’s see if this fixes it. Thanks

Every time I start looking for fixes to Apple CarPlay issues, I eventually find that the issue started after an iOS update. It seems that the only way to find a longer term solution is for EVERYONE with these issues to complain to Apple. It will take some doing, but they will be more sensitive to this issue if they are hearing from us constantly. They will always blame the third party manufacturers of the radios, but they will notice that they are getting the blame from the users, and that will prompt them to find a solution.

Yes I agree when I look up iOS 14.6 CarPlay issues I found a Reddit forum talking about some issues with connectivity to the CarPlay. I just updated to 14.7 that released today so I hope that took care of it. It’s not biggest problem in the world but man it’s annoying.

I doubt they would care as much as you hope. Apple is bigger than all those 3rd party's. They are the big dog and it is up to those companies to conform to Apple instead of the other way around. There is no way they can keep up with a bunch of smaller companies' nuances and glitches, nor do they want to because they know iPhone users will more than likely stay iPhone users even if they have to deal with these problems. Think of all the apps people have on their phones. I know people with a hundred or more. Only a small percentage are in car applications.

This is the very definition of "1st world problems"...

Not sure if you have tried yet, but try just turning your phone off then back on. I was having the same issue with connecting car play. Sometimes it would connect, then other times I couldn’t get it to. My wife suggested restarting my phone, and no issues since haha. But not work in your case but it only takes a minute to try and it’s free.

So turns on it’s not the cable or the USB port. Realized it goes out when I hit a road bump. Phone stays charging but CarPlay disconnects and I have to plug and replug. I had Best Buy install when I purchased the head unit so I’m going to give them a call hopefully they can help me out.

Before you do that, you might check your phone's touch screen and "shake to undo" settings first. I have had my phone do things like that on bumps as well and that is what it was. My problem was during calls, it would mute the phone when I hit a bump.

Yes I did that but it doesn’t have anything to do with phone or cable. It is the head unit that disconnects from carol after going over a big enough bump on the road. The phone stays charging but the CarPlay disconnects. If I tap on the dash right above the headunit hard enough with out me driving it disconects. Kind of weird because I did my research and this head unit was rated pretty well only had it 3 months and this is happening. Was really liking it but I live in Chicago so the roads are HORRIBLE. It’s constantly disconnects now while driving

    UPDATE!!

Took my truck in to Best Buy to check out the CarPlay issue. Looks like the issue is the connection between the head unit and the factory usb. Apparently some head units don’t work properly with the factory usb outlet so what they did is they extended the headunits usb outlet so I can connect directly to the radio and it’s been working. Hasn’t disconnected once so far. Hope this helps anyone having issues in the future. Also thanks for all the advice!
