Towing problems- No transmission cooler on 2020 TRD Pro

Are we talking the crackhead hookers that weight 90 pounds or the one of the larger varieties?

FWIW....this past 4th weekend I saw several Tundras towing some decent sized campers. Most were DC's by coincidence. Looked proper. All I'm saying is that there are a lot of tunnies towing some decent sized trailers. Didn't see anything about any tunnies having issues on the local news.

 

Did you hear if any blew a tranny?

 

If the trans blows up during warranty, remove the cooler and put it back to stock before taking it to the dealer.

I spent the last week camping around your state, and I saw tons of Tundras pulling campers (most seemed to be in the 20’ range, but there were quite a few larger) and tons of other Tundras covered in armor/bumpers/rack/tent/etc. Most were probably at or well over their door jamb numbers.

Whether any of us think it’s right or wrong or safe or dangerous, the Tundra is widely understood to be a truck that can regularly be pushed past its advertised limits.

I will say that in all my driving this week, taking my overweight fat pig up and over mountain passes, driving extended 6% grades, my pan temps stayed around or under 200°F. I watched TC lockup on my Fusion app and even drove in S mode to stay in lockup as much as possible. Given that in Tennessee unloaded without a cooler I was seeing pan temps north of 230°F, I’m glad to have installed a cooler.

 

I’m throwing in the towel and getting a cooler also. Already ordered it for the Aug delivery.

I’ll write up a longer post about why.

but basically after observing how well my 2021 limited 4 runner manages thermal loads on transmission (A 5 spd and 3.73 final gear) In some tougher situations I was really really wishing that the tundra would perform similarly.

If 2021 4Runner performed as the tundra did I think I’d have a different take. It has an old school in tank ( bottom tank) trans cooler and sits in 130 deg ambients vs 205 deg coolant going to puck.

i put about 1000 miles on it over 6 days in a wide variety of situations that would have driven temps up. I never saw a TC temp above 206. Pan temps peaked at 198 very briefly. In stop and go traffic it cooled off to 177F.

it gave me a lot of confidence and after a while I stopped watching the temps. I really need this in my tundra and the cooler install is an easy solution.

 

Had the same experience with my 4Runner Trail Edition. Was disappointed about the Tundra not having one but bit the bullet and put one in. All good now and No regrets except for not realizing it didn't have one until after purchase.

 

Took me 9 hours to install. Never installed one before. I could do it again in 4. Not shown is the thermostat, hard lines, soft lines, holes drilled through the wind deflector, etc. Just need to get a temp gauge to finish the job. Kit is from GenuineCoolingSystems.com. Very satisfied customer. Toyota dealership did a complete fluid flush using my AMSOIL ATF.

 

Fck you Toyota for removing an essential piece of equipment on our post 2019 tundras!

 

Welcome to the dark side. Sounds like your Tundra will still run hotter than the 4Runner, but the aux cooler helps keep pan temps around 200F. I’ve put over 2500 miles on my Tundra in the last 8 days, and my TC got up to 235F a couple times very briefly on very long mountain grades where I was taking advantage of the passing lane, but once it finds lockup, it drops like a rock to match the pan.

 

Recommended reading would be a really long post on the TacomaWorld website by a guy named Gearcruncher, post #2 dated 2014. The post primarily talks about the Toyota ATF WS (World Standard) transmission fluid. Same stuff the factory still puts in our vehicles.

There are other noteworthy subjects in the post like the Magnusen/Moss Warranty Act and the use of other-than-Toyota oils, lubes, and fluids. The OP provides website documentation to back up much of what he claims.

That’s where my research started months ago and ended up with my recent cooler installation and fluid flush.

Any issues with ac performance with cooler?

 

None that I’ve noticed

 

None. I’m running the Hayden, and it covers up such a tiny part of the AC radiator, I think any difference in the AC performance is negligible. Looks like the Setrab overlaps even less, assuming overlap/airflow restriction is what you’re getting at.

 

The kit I used has the cooler mounted about 2-3” in front of the A/C condenser. I realize my cooler is a big fatty and the waste heat goes right into the condenser then the radiator. I can live with that.

By the way, if you choose to install a cooler you cannot go wrong with a Hayden cooler. Mr. Hayden invented the transmission cooler after all.

Theres a guy on YouTube that does a really good step by step installation on a 2020 Tundra. He uses a Hayden cooler.
Just type in: Transmission cooler install on 2020 Tundra.

It was very helpful. The fluid temp while checking the fluid level was totally new to me, ie, no more dipstick to check the level. Toyota is really quirky when it comes to that. I used the WS fluid to get it done then went to the dealer for the flush.

 

What did the flush run you? If you posted this, sorry, I missed it.

 

The flush with tax and waste oil fee came out to $242.08 not including the cost of the AMSOIL atf. That was $233.00. I had them do a overkill flush meaning I brought more than was needed and they flushed about a gallon of “good” oil through and out.

There are way cheaper ways to go this I fully understand.

The genuinecoolingsystems website has very good easy to understand instructions on installation that can be downloaded.

I’d recommend these instructions no matter who you may buy from. The owner has a Tundra and his product is Tundra specific.

There are steps in the process that absolutely must be followed ie, leveling the truck before doing it and having a way to read the pan temp before draining the excess to name just two.
