Rear shock how-to

Haven't found it in 1 place but is there a how-to for rear shock replacement? What I'm mainly looking for is the long handle wrench that makes it easier. Ran across it a while back but striking out searching at the moment

I just did a 2000 with original shocks in it — 68,000 miles and it just had it’s frame replaced 1 month ago — top shock nuts where just removed/reinstalled withe the frame replacement

I figured they would come right off — not a chance — I wrestled for over an hour before I just cut them off — dealer mechanics must have put them on with the bed off — maybe even red loctite

Drop the spare tire and you can get easy access to the drivers side — pass side wasn’t so bad from wheel well

I ended up using a cutting torch on the drivers side, worked great but lit the rubber bushings on fire — was a bit of a scramble — pass side I used a dremel and about 10 cut off wheels

Figure out how to cut them with whatever is available to you — you’ll be happier

 

Socket and a dewalt impact driver

 

I knew I was throwing away my old shocks at 316k miles. I got a 4 inch angle grinder and a grinding wheel. I ground two flat places on the shock strut. Not the body of the shock.

That let me put vice grips on the shaft so it wouldn't spin while I turned the wrench to remove the old shock. New shock went in with a 5mm Allen wrench in the end of the shock shaft. 19?mm wrench was what tightened the nut for the shaft.

The Allen wrench kept the shaft from spinning while I tightened the nut.

 

Install use ranch, taking it off use impact driver, with WD 40

 

There's no room at the top of the shock for an impact wrench on first gens.

 

Does ranch work like never seize?

 

I discovered that there are 12" sawzall blades when I changed my shocks...

 

Huh, I must be lucky. I don't recall using any special tools or techniques when I replaced mine. Twas an easy job.
...and I think ranch is delicious on everything.

 

It's all coming back to me now, kind of depends on the FGT truck on how difficult or not this is. I ordered some ICONS for the rear and now I'll order the "wranch".
Gonna replace the BJ bolts here in a bit then I'll spray that rear shock mounting areas down. The shocks look like shit, hopefully the hardware isn't too bad. I can't wait till this is done hopefully reduces the little bounce I think I'm getting from having the stiff Icons up front and shitty tuff country worn out in back....Ranch is good but Orlondo's is my new fix all where ranch used to be. Not on a first gen. Later models are very different.

 

Some of the later generation crowd complained and some of us got threatened with vacation over the memes.

Really? That's too bad. I'm 55 and find many of them very creative and witty at getting a point across, like the ones Tundra2 posted above. I saw a 300 one somewhere on here yesterday while searching where Leonidis was kicking a red 2nd gen down the sewer hole with the words "This is first gennn". Pretty good stuff.

 

Yup. Its apparently seen as hostile, but it has always been done in good humor as an attempt to keep bad info out of the first gen threads. So many things that work for them don't apply to our trucks.

Doesn't look too bad, hopefully after it's sprayed it'll be cake. The Allen key feels pretty fucked though. Can't get a good picture....off this subject without starting a new thread... probably gonna regret this....Can I replace lower ball joint bolts 1 by 1 just jacking up each tire individually or maybe while on ground? Seems there is more stress on that set up when left to hang. Then a separate jack is needed to push arm into place.

I never had luck with the multi quote button. I found that if you quote somebody, and before you lost go hit quote on another post, it works pretty well to add in.

As far as rear shock, the method I used was to cut off the sleeve on the shock to expose the shaft. Then I used a grinder to make a flat spot on the shaft and held that with big vise grips. Then a ratcheting box end on the top with lots of lube.

I dont think vinegar would make for long lasting lubricity.

 

Ranch is not a lubricant.
