I’d go for it...personally. Call me crazy, but just take some preventative steps and make sure you are in a safe position related to the spring force. If you haven’t shot a shock across a room than you haven’t lived. However if you are doing heavy compression of the spring then I’d say to find a better spring compressor or have a shop do it.

 

Just wear a helmet.

 

And a mouth guard

 

In a word, Yes. You're basically pulling the pin on the hand grenade and hoping your grip on the spoon doesn't slip. If all goes well, you win. If one side slips and the other holds, you have to figure out how to release the tension safely and start over. If one side slips and the other doesn't, you risk a lot of pain until you heal, and "I told you so" from the wife for years to come. If both sides slip and you don't get hurt, you still have to pay someone to assemble them for you. Spring for the extra bucks and let someone else have a story to tell if things go (literally and figuratively) sideways.

I have 0 copay and 0 deductible. But they don't cover pain. I had my SIL do mine, at his workplace with a wall mounted professional grade spring compressor.

 

If your in chicago come thru I have a professional spring compressor in my garage do it for free

 

While you are taking those back.

Find a good small independent shop - call and ask Discount Tire for a referral. I paid $40 to have two done.

 

I think I paid $50 to have mine assembled while I waited. There are two things that would have me considering the no compressor method or the big ass spring compressor rental - 1, I like doing things myself just to say I’ve done it, and 2, coordinating a trip to the shop while they have time to do it, and driving around 20 miles each way, would be difficult. Not sure what OP’s exact situation is though. We’ll see how brave I’m feeling next time I need to take my coilovers apart…

 

I swapped to 700lb eibach coils using shankly b1067 spring compressor for $60 off Amazon. Sadly they aren't available right now but there are similar designs. I used the death wishes you have currently for a little backup support. Tense moments but it worked well, I'd do it again.

 

Last time I used spring compressors like that my ass was definitely tight. Expecting that shit to explode.

That was with lowering springs on my Lexus. Spring rate was much lower too. Probably 400 lbs/inch.

 

I used those, but I used four. I told myself not to do it again, but then I did it again on my dads tundra. The second time I used two but used some bolts for the safety pins. That was the last time. I wish I had known about the advance auto ones, looks much better. Also, the cheap ones will scratch through the nice coating on the spring... so NO.

 

I’m in the Fort Collins area so it’s a bit of a drive with traffic these days.

 

Use a floor jack under the lower control arm, loosen the top shock nut and the alignment CAM bolts, disconnect the ball joint and stabilizer link, then decompress the old spring by slowly lowering the floor jack with the front end supported on jack stands.

Repeat in the reverse order to compress the new spring assembly and reassemble the front suspension. Drive to alignment shop and get front end realigned. Easy peasy.

 

Ahh you didn’t have to do that but what a GUY! I’ll call them tomorrow.

LOL. I used those exact compressors on my Eibach kit. They worked just fine. Just grease up threads and take your time cranking down one side at a time. Took me about 15 minutes to build both coilovers. Just my opinion. I've done far sketchier things working on trucks.

 

How much compression did it take to get the kit together? When I was sizing it up it didn’t seem like it would take much!

 

It was about 3". It doesn't seem like you need to compress much but you have to take into account how thick the top hat bushing, washer and nut are. Yes it will seem sketchy at first but I didn't feel unsafe at anytime. Just have everything laid on your bench ready to go so you can get it together quickly and release the tension.

 

I say do it.

 

I tried this same method on my 2021 with this Eibach kit but I could not get the shock top to align with the top plate hole to save my life. I fought with it for hours because I've done it on many other vehicles but no luck with this truck. So I finally broke down and bought the compressors.
