Hey guys need some help. Getting new tires for stock SR5 4x4. Looking at Nitto Ridge Grappler and Toyo AT3. Which tire would you get and why? My current ones are 255/65/18 street tires. I’m not adding a leveling kit or planning on adding one. I do a lot of highway miles and most off roading I do is for hunting. I am wanting something to make my truck look better but want it to still ride smooth and not be loud. The guy at the store said I could do Nitto Ridge Grappler up to 285/65/18 seems like a very big tire and it could rub..

What would be some other sizes you suggest..

Thoughts and suggestions? New to truck world. Wanting it to look a little taller or beefy if that makes sense.

I had RG’s on my’19 Pro. I was not impressed. There’s a thread somewhere on this site that lists the biggest tire size that will fit.

I previously had Ridge Grapplers 285/70r18's and wasn't too impressed either, had uneven wear and got obnoxiously loud around the 20k. Currently running Toyo at3's 295/70r18s with no regrets, hardly showing any wear with over 10k.20200914_141902.jpg

I had stock size RG’s (275-65-18). My truck currently has 275-70-18 Nitto Trail Grapplers.

I ran Hankook Dyna Pro ATM's on my last Tundra (2 sets). I ran the 10 ply and got 70,000 out of each set. I liked them but at about 60,000 they got loud. I am running General Grabber A/T. I believe these are 8 ply. They are nice looking and ride well but I will probably try to find a little bit more aggressive tire for next set. I wanted the Duratrac but they didn't have the size I wanted.

I hunt about 40 days every fall so I see plenty of back/gravel roads. Snow, etc..

I put a leveling kit on my 2018 Sport and run 275/70/18 BFG KO2's. They are at roughly 25K miles and have minimal tire noise on the highway (sorry, no experience with the brands you mentioned). I don't have any rubbing problems however I have FX Pro Wheels with a +18 offset. I am not sure of the offset on the TRD rims or if it will impact the rubbing concern.

#1 thing to look for is load index and load range.

    https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/techpage.jsp?techid=55

you can have stock sized tires but if you have E load range tires, it's going to be louder, higher load range/index also mean the tires are stronger, so pay attention to what you are buying, I believe the stock Micheline is C or D load range with load index of 116 or so.

#2 like many said, 275/70r18 is a good size, it's a 33" overall diameter so it give you about additional 0.5 to 1" of clearance and weights very similar to stock tires.

Ridge Grappler is louder cause it's a hybrid, aka All terrains and mud terrains, and most sizes are in D or E load range, if Nitto is a must, Terra Grappler 2 is a great tires, very quiet if you avoid the 10 ply (Load index E) as we have them on one of our cars.

Yokohama G015 had been very good to me in the past, it was super quiet on road and very very good in snow, it also lasted almost 60k miles for me.

Another question is, why do you want to go larger size? 255/70r18 is 32.1" and they should do very well based on what your needs are.

Like the Falken 285/65r18s so far but only had them about 200 miles (should be no rubbing even stock). My favorite tire has traditionally been the BFG All-Terrain KO/KO2 that I had been running the past 10+ years on my 4runner and FJ Cruiser (when I had it). Whichever you pick, I suggest going with a 10-ply that will hold 80psi. I usually run em around 50 psi and this seems to help with tread life in my experience (for comparison a friend of mine had them on his F-150 and he had to replace them around 35-40,000 miles - come to find out he had been running them at 35-40 psi). I have 45,000 on my 4runner BFGs and there's a ton of tread left.

For you and anyone else, I'd recommend looking at a site like tiresize.com(no personal affiliation to i). I stumbled on it in my research and found it gives you more details when it comes to variances in dimensions by the Overall size versus each brand/model.
    For Example:
    Falken Widpeak AT3w - 32.6" x 11.3"
    Toyo Open Country ATIII - 32.6" x 11.5"
    Cooper Discoverer ST MAXX - 32.8" x 11.8"

I am wanting something to give a little more clearance with out a leveling kit. My tires are 255/70/18 now and look small to me. I am worried the 285/65/18 will rub or stick out and the tire place said the 275/70/18 would be too tall or big.

    Thoughts?

How are Ridge Grapplers compared to Toya RT or AT on noise and ride ?

275/70/18 fits fine. Worst case you'll need to remove the front little plastics pieces which takes about 12 seconds.

I have toyo at3s but only for like 250 miles. So far loving them. only other tire experience I have had is cooper st maxx on my tacoma. So far I think I like the toyo better, but it's way to early to tell.

    More than a few.....
I was in the same boat as you. Not wanting to do any suspension upgrades for now but my stock 255's were not cutting it. I ended up going with the OEM size KO2's in 275/65 18. Plenty of tire for me and its a common size. I didnt want to worry about rubbing or the speedometer being off, even if its just a tad. I couldnt be happier with a stock setup. The 285 is a much less common size and likely alot more expensive and hard to find in a pinch. If i were you, i would just go with the OEM size. Its not much smaller than what you were thinking and would be willing to bet you wouldnt notice the size difference. Just my .02.

I'm running KO2, the more they wear they louder they get.
I've got 40K miles on them and about ready for new tires.
Think I'm going to go with Cooper AT3 XLT this time.

Cooper AT3 XLT | Toyota Tundra Forum (tundras.com)

Can't help with sizes and rubbing, I'm running 33" 275/60/20..

285/65r18 is around 32.6" (true OD depend on make/models), while stock is 32.1", so in reality you will only gain 0.2" of clearance.

275/70r18 is about 33" which means 0.5" of additional ground clearance.

285 on stock offset may rub tinny bit on front mud flaps, 275/70r18 will be mostly fine.

As reference, I run 285/75r18, which has true OD of 35.1" on stock wheels and stock Pro suspension, it rubbed the front mud flaps which I removed and doesn't stick out at all.

I have 275/70/18 Toyo AT3s on stock suspension and it doesn't rub anywhere.

They're not too big, I think they're what size the truck should have come with and my speedo is actually more accurate now.

I've had them on the wife's SUV for a year+ and they've been great, so I bought a set for the truck.

There is a little noise, but not much.

I’m in the same boat as the OP, need new tires soon. Right now I’m on stock Michelins. My question…if I go just a smidge bigger like some of you guys are suggesting, will I need to do anything to recalibrate the speedometer, etc.? I’ve owned trucks all my life but have always just stayed with stock tire sizes, so I don’t have any experience with that. Thanks for any help!

With 275/70/18s my speedometer is spot on. It's more accurate than it was with the stock tires.

If you live north go with the Toyo AT3. They are 3 peak all season which means they're snow as well as mud tires. Note, 3 peak is a more stringent standard for snow than M+S
Just put some on my truck 275/70R18 after much research. Purchased and installed for $1,001 with a military discount.

I put on Falken wildpeaks at3 275/70 r18 and they rubbed at full turn with bilstein 5110 on middle setting. I had to bend skid plate slightly. Great tire in all conditions. Its a heavy tire. 61 lbs which affected my mpg. I may be switching to toyo AT3 in the near future which is almost 10 pound lighter in the same size.
