Dash Cam recommendations for ‘20 SR5?

Hello I’m seeking advice on a dual dash cam kit for my ‘20 SR5 DC.

I’m currently considering the Apeman C860 dual dash cam kit at just under $100 with 3” screen, 128 GB card capability, and other cool features. I don’t think I want the newer WiFi version, as my wireless CarPlay adapter uses WiFi and unlike Bluetooth, WiFi networks seem to allow one-at-a-time only.
...or maybe they won’t interfere with each other(?). Anyone have good/bad experience with using two WiFi devices in the same vehicle?

Any other good, affordable brands/models I should consider? (Links please )

Is there an easy way to grab power from my rear view mirror? I’ve seen plug in adapters that work with older Tundra & 4Runner models, but not my ‘20. I have a 12-pin plug on my mirror. It looks like it should work, but product info does not say it will and reviews say it will cause check engine lights and possibly worse.

I bought one 3 years ago, we tried one, took it back, resolution was too low. If I got another, it would be 4K which I assume they all are now.

 

I recently bought the Apeman kit you mentioned and have the mirror adapter plug powering it on my 2020 SR5. So far everything is working good. Still learning the camera and it's features and have not hooked up the rear camera yet. But I"m happy with it and the mirror adapter made powering it very easy.

 

The Thinkware X700 is a good kit. Thinkware has been used in Europe for years and is one of the most reliable and most popular companies around. Their customer service is great and is in the US.

I use a forward facing only Viofo and like it. To me, it's set it and forget it. I don't care about an App or transfer rate to my phone via WiFi or bluetooth. I take the card out when needed and view on my PC.

Rear I'd a little funkier to hookup with the Roll Down rear window, so I opted for front only. Mine is.hooked up via USB only right now. Eventually I will hardwire so I can use the gimmicky parking mode.

Thanks for the link, and I’ll check out the Viofo. Still pondering mounting methods; I don’t want to mess up my window tint. Someone recently posted a bracket for the rear cam that looks promising.

Yep. I have that dongle in my Amazon cart. Was wanting to know whether or not power stays on with the key off.

I use the rear view mirror on my 2020 SR5 to power the escort passport 9500 (12v) and a Mobius mini action cam (5v). The Mobius uses a 12v to 5v step down converter that’s Velcroed to the back of the rear view mirror.

The Mobius mini is mainly used for drones. So you can get a shielded RF case which allows you to mount under the radar detector. There’s Mobius settings that allow it to act like a dash cam. It’s a nice, less visible option.

Test your rear view mirror wires with a multi meter, don’t trust online pics. Also get thin wire taps, if you get a kit you may need to file it down for a good fit. All of this stuff is on Amazon. Good luck

 

I second this for using power from the rearview mirror. I currently have one installed and use it for my gopro.

 

I need to figure something out for my truck as well honestly. I've witnessed way too many things just sitting parked in my car, often times the driver just speeds off after checking if the coast is clear.

yeah unfortunately not. That is the one bad thing about it for dash cams while parked.

 

I have Vantrue dash cams ... one in the front and one in the rear.

 

I literally just installed a Viofo A120v2 in my Tundra a few minutes ago. I will have to wait for the rear camera after I make a pit stop at the Dash Cam Store in Austin next week. First dash cam owner, so I do not know what advice I can provide at this point.

I also purchased the adapter for my rear view mirror, but the mini usb they provide was too short. I have a longer one on order before I install it.

 

What dongle and where did you purchase it?

 

I picked up the dongle on Amazon through a suggestion below this thread during my research. I installed it and really didn't like the way the wires hung out around the mirror. I ended up getting a 45 degree USB plug and hid the wires. I sold the dongle here on this site.

The power does not stay on when the ignition is off. I bought the dongle, and as soon as ignition is off you will lose power to the camera. You have to buy a hardwired kit to be able to use the park mode on your dash camera.

 

I just installed the dongle and all looks good and works. Plugged in my old Viofo.
