2006 sr5 4wd fluids

Stopped by local pepboys in California today to find out they are changing to advanced Auto. Subsequently everything left over is 50% off. Not a huge inventory left but fluids they did have. There system said I should use 90wt fluid in rear differential. Can anyone confirm this or tell me what I should use? Or better yet tell me every fluid and I will pick up tomorrow. The differential is an LSD.
PS. Asked the manager and he said every store in CA is going to advanced so check your local spot to see if having a sale. Cheers

 

For the rear diff, do Lucas 80w-90 (not synthetic). It has the ‘modifiers’ in it for LSD and works great. Cost less than synthetics, too. Hard to find Straight 90 but I think a company called Modul? has it.

Front Diff and Transfer is

$39 75w-90 GL-5 Limited Slip, Ultra Long Drain 500k Miles, Manual Transmission, Gear/Differential Lubricant (1 Gallon)

75w-90. Synthetic or the Lucas (non-synthetic) will do good in those.

 

What does your owner's manual specify?

I mean, you can trust the PepBoys computer, or posts by various unknown-to-you posters, or you can trust Toyota.

I’d be sure to trust random internet posters and an auto parts shop over the actual vehicle manufacturer...lol....like when I took my wife’s ‘07 Odyssey for an oil change (was moving, no place to do it myself) and they recommended 0w30, to which I said nope....look at the oil fill cap....and make it high mileage....

Besides differential, grab any Mobil 1 ATF fluid you can find. That stuff is over $10/quart.

I usually wait for a 30% off at Pep Boys before I grab any.

The way I read it is. 90wt rear differential. Does it matter if it is dino or synthetic. I assume I also want to purchase one with limited slip additives.

 

Interesting. I wasn’t aware Toyota switched over to the WS fluid for the first gens. Thankfully my 02 Tundra only requires Dexron 3 or equivalent.

 

Yes, interesting. The '03 calls for T-IV. It just keeps getting more expensive.

 

I’ve trusted two Goofy Service Shops over the years. One a Stealer and another a Local. Both have done shtuff wrong wrong wrong (see my build page for their Rear Axle Debacle). Autozoned will sell you ‘whatever’ the computer says which isn’t always right.

Somethings like only using Dyno Lucas in the rear diff is trial and error I learned here. Call your Stealer (I did) and ask what they put in the Rear Diff? Mine says they use

75w-90 (wrong wrong wrong!) and they are a Toy Stealer!

 

I would say, "Exactly right." Autozone, independent mechanics, dealers, and so forth...have all been wrong at one time or another.

Trust the owner's manual and the FSM for your year and model...for the first word on all these issues. Starting there...if a fellow decides to vary from the suggested practice, so be it. But, I suggest, always make your decision knowing what the OM and FSM suggest.

I bought Mobile 1motor oil for tundra and ram. Got 4 bottles of Royal Purple 75-90w oil. Everything I seem to read says this is fine to use. Not really 90wt gear oil. All seems to be 75-90, 80-90, 75-145. I can also use it in front diff and transfer case. Does this seem acceptable?

 

I still stand behind post #2, but its your truck and bought stuff already so go ahead and put it in. I’ve not used the RP for diffs but a few say it sucks for our diffs. Mobil 1

75w-90 Synthetic made my Rear LSD chatter a little. Works fine in Transfer and Front Diff.

Lucas 80w-90 solved it. Cheaper, too.

 

You'll never make any friends with that attitude.
