Tire sensors

Is there a fuze for tire sensors on 2006 Tundra. About ready to change out sensors for regular valve stems . So wanting to turn off tire sensor light.

 

Read this thread on different Tundra forum. There is a how to with pictures on page 2 on which wire to cut and ground out to disable the TPMS system.

 

I just by-passed mine a couple weeks ago.


TPMS light came on a week ago. Mine is a 2006 DC, I decided to try and disable it by cutting the pink/silver wire and grounding it. Worked like a champ. I cut the wire and ran it thru a 3 way switch then to ground. The other leg of the switch, I ran the wire back up to the harness, completing the circuit like it was factory. Now in bypass mode, no light. In the mode that completes the circuit, I have a flashing TPMS light. In the "center" switch position (open circuit)I have a steady on TPMS light.

I have a tire pressure gauge, I rotate and inspect my own tires and I look at my tires every time I get in/out of the truck. I'm not going thru the hassle and expense of fixing this on a 15 year old truck. Just like the check engine light for the secondary air injection pump. Sometimes delete is the best option.

I had to pull the radio, I couldn't get my fat hands thru the glove box side. A little tight and awkward but well worth the effort.

I don't trust much of what I read on the internet, especially when it comes to cutting a wire and grounding it. I put a 2 amp fuse in the wire I grounded. I hate the smell of hot electrical smoke.

 

If you have disabled your TPMS system. Do you have any problems buying new tires? Does the tire store not want to do business with you if your TPMS doesn't work or they can't pad their bill on the TPMS new sensors and programming upsell?

 

Is it easier to simply remove the lamp for the annoying idiot light? That's what I did with the seat belt idiot light but I don't have experience with the TPMS light.

The argument is that TPMS is a fairly new invention in the overall existance of automobiles. For decades we have been able to keep tabs on tire pressure and inflate tires when needed without TPMS. In fact my tundra was the only vehicle I'm my fleet with tire sensors. If you keep tabs on your vehicles condition and maintenance as you should, then you will never need the system to alert you of tires needing air. Its really not complex and everyone can do as they please with their own vehicle wether you like it or not.

 

You can check tire pressure at 65 MPH?

The last flat I had at 70 MPH (ran over a tire weight). I new it by the way the truck was riding before I noticed the TPMS light was blinking.

My wife says every winter. Can you check the air in my tires? The tire lights been blinking a couple of months.

 

Proper tire pressure is important. Tires fail, babies fly out windows and general mayhem ensues when tires are run well-below recommended tire pressures (sometimes).

TPMS is far more helpful for cars with low profile tires and less helpful for trucks with 75 series tires. A 35-45 series tire gives little visual cue that its underinflated while 65 - 85 series tires show clearly when they're low on air.

Darwin's law comes into play when anyone drives a FGT with tire pressures 10% - 20% underinflated and doesn't stop to do something about it. No chimes needed.

My wife's winter wheels have TPMS sensors in them, but I'm just not inclined to take the trouble to reprogram the system every fall and every spring when I swap them. If my wife wanted it, then I'd do it, but she agrees: it's more trouble than it's worth. (and I have a working copy of Techstream on a laptop)

I guess my 2000 Tundra is a death trap, because it doesn't even have a TPMS system.!

 

Nope but the feel and sound of a low tire would let me know of the issue just fine. How in the world did we survive before before this technology! The horror!

 

Suit yourself. I prefer systems to work as designed. The older gentleman that I bought my truck from never fixed the TPMS. He stated it can not be fixed.

Sure, it cost a fair amount to get repaired. But it has also paid off.
The XSP wheels have 2 valve stems. On 2 different tires I have had an air leak.
The truck looked perfectly fine. No leaning, no pulling.
Yet the system did as it was designed. It alerts the driver to POSSIBLE problems.

it’s like an oil pressure gauge. Sure, I would know if I was 4 quarts low on oil.
“Truck runs great”. RIGHT! It’s your money.

while you are at it, take all your gauges out of the dash.
Model T never had those, they did just fine.

That's really my point. You can choose to keep if functional if you so desire and the rest of us can also enable or disable it as we please. There is an argument for both sides.

 

My truck must be a super death trap then. No abs, no tpms, no sway bars (that's the only one I miss), and whatever else you can imagine would give a bureaucrat and itching for a fresh #2 and a clean pad.

 

You should disable the airbags too. We die like real men.

 

I almost did in my ranger. It still needs the recall. Who knows if the airbags on my toyota are good to go. I did the recall last year and immediately got a letter saying great job now you need to come back for air bags. I was confused.

 

Airbags release a toxic gas into the Atmosphere. They need banning. Unite! Fight! For your Rights!

 

I am considering adding an aftermarket system. Have you guys gone down this route? I want a system that allows me to monitor 7 tires. I want real time or nearly real time results.

Does anyone know what the perimeters of the factory system are?

 

I haven't added anything, but I have seen some that look alright. Seems like it would be good for monitoring your trailer tires. It can be hard to tell when you blow a tire on a tandem axle trailer. Especially if you are driving straight.
