AGM Batteries in ur Tundra

I wouldn't spend money on an AGM until you investigate post #11 above.

 

Odyssey Batteries are about the best you can buy and should last 10 years no problem. LA batteries have jumped in price and make the AGM batteries an easier choice.

My Odyssey died in my Rock Buggy after one of the nephews pulled the headlight switch and left the lights on for about 2 weeks. It charged up but didn’t last much longer. Battery was 6 years old and would sit without a tender for months and months and would always fire right up with no issues.

I’m planning to run a group 31 odyssey in the Tundra sometime in the future.

I’ve heard of 2nd and 3rd gen Tundras having issues with not charging the AGM’s but not the 1st gens, may have to look into that.

 

@onesojourner I will try to find that guy who used the voltage mod. @FirstGenVol In the meantime I kinda already have an Optima red top on order so when that comes in tomorrow I will go pick up a battery charger along with it, and I will wire up 2 digital voltmeters so I can keep an eye on all the volts for the alternator and the battery. Just need to know if I need a special charger for it the AGM. As for the battery weirdness some of the water probably came out during some wheeling so it may not have boiled but my alternator is only 3 years old. I knew the old owner so i got the full service record on the ol tundy.

 

Northstar (and the batteries plus brand x2power) are both on par. Northstar was recently purchased by odyssey. I expect there to be some more rebrands coming soon with that arrangement. The only modification I had to do for the group 31 was to ditch the battery tray.

 

@Coupe's battery tie-downs work great for offroad use but won't solve leaking.

I'm probably one of the people others are mentioning. I have been running a NorthStar 27F for over two years now no problem. I did drain it very low once but got it surge charged/ load tested afterwards.

I recently put in an HKB voltage booster and a voltage meter to easily check. With the engine running, battery is getting anywhere between 14.1v-14.5v. I never measured voltage with the engine running prior to this mod so I can't speak to the numbers beforehand, but if I had to guess they weren't in the optimal range.

I can say however that the battery voltage after the engine is shut off is higher now after adding the HKB booster. I do think there is something to be said about using the boosters if you're running an AGM.

Additionally, I started putting the truck on a trickle charger whenever I'm not using it which can be weeks at a time.

 

I have run AGM batteries since 2009 in my truck. The first one (diehard platinum agm) lasted around 8 years and may have only died because I let my truck sit for several months. I replaced it with a diehard gold agm and haven't had a problem yet.

The main reasons I went agm is no maintenance and no spillage. Plus I used to enjoy the drive in movies and after 4 hours of a stereo and subwoofer playing it was pretty common for vehicles to not start. I never had that trouble with the agm, in fact I found myself jump starting people at the drive in practically every weekend.

I have an agm from vatozone in my wifes car. They're not all created equal, if I let her car sit for 2 months its a coin toss on if it starts or not. My truck can sit that long and fire up immediately.

 

I found the one that doesn't have the dip witches and it was $390. Is that what you paid for yours. because for something that looks like a fuse 400 buck a roos is a lot

 

Not really sure what you mean. My battery was in the mid $200's from a battery store I've gone to for years that also warranties, load tests etc.

The simple GM Diode fuse is cheaper but electrical wizardry is beyond my knowledge.

 

Like I said, I also ran the AGM two years without modifications and no problems. Experience similar to @Darkness. These mods were done mainly for piece of mind, whatever that may be.

I also vote to investigate post #11 first.

 

Ouchole! Thats too high. The one in my truck was $260 and I got a slight discount that brought it to $240. The one in my wifes car was $190 (different size so price doesn't apply here).

 

The one on the actual website is 60 for just the fuse style. the $400 one was from a taco world link. last time I trust those dudes

 

I think he was worried he would need to adjust things for the correct voltage. It turned out that the fuse would have been spot on. I intend to explore the GM diode. I have it in the glove box. I wont do it until I have monitored where the voltage is at before and after.

 

Those little down syndrome truck mfs sent me to some scam. so happy to know its actually 60. as for #11 if figured out that I'm dumb and dumber. I'm dumb because when I put the water in the first time I over filled it so thats why it sloshes out. and I'm dumber because I realized that some of the shit that also got spilled was coolant. Us kids have to be dumb sometimes.

 

Well that's kinda making me question thinking about the possibility of buying one. My truck tends to sit around quite a bit and after 3 weeks it's a guaranteed jump.

General rule of thumb when buying AGM over lead acid flooded...twice the cost, half the life. BTW, "Absorbed Glass Mat" (AGM) is also lead acid. Difference is that the electrolyte is absorbed in the mat making it "maintenance free" or non-spillable.

 

My nova has an optima. The smallest/lightest i could get to turn over at 11:1. Never had any problems, but the nova had a toggle switch electrical system, and a battery tender.

Hilarious....you can simply look at the warranty of a regular battery (usually 2 years) and the warranty for an X2 power AGM (5 years). More than double the warranty of the cheaper battery, more than double the life of the cheaper battery, and double the price. .

 

It seems only one *insert snowflake* present here, but I digress, the AGM is not for everyone and completely stupid to buy if you are not going to use it for what it's meant to be used for. Again, YMMV *insert snowflake*

It cleared up some of the misconceptions I had developed concerning lead acid battery failure.

"Charging a lead acid battery is simple, but the correct voltage limits must be observed. Choosing a low voltage limit shelters the battery, but this produces poor performance and causes a buildup of sulfation on the negative plate. A high voltage limit improves performance but forms grid corrosion on the positive plate. While sulfation can be reversed if serviced in time, corrosion is permanent. (See BU-403: Charging Lead Acid.)"

 

The line "Your mileage may vary" comes to mind. Mine certainly did. I replaced two X2 Power AGM batteries that were well within warranty (Batteries Plus weaseled out of honoring the warranty) in order to make sure the vehicles started. I paid a premium price for a product that was allegedly correct for the vehicles, but it turns out that additional maintenance and special charging is required. If regular lead acid batteries required this, people would be hounding the battery companies to improve their product or the car manufacturers to correct the charging system. If I buy a product, I expect it to perform as advertised. If I park a vehicle for an extended time, I expect the battery to need an occasional top up. The battery on a daily driver shouldn't run down unless it's defective. I'll never buy another AGM battery. They're a waste of money.
