JBL System question

I am sorry that this has probably been covered but after an hour of digging I cannot find my answer.

is the problem with the crappy sound from the JBL sound system the head unit, the amp, the speakers or all? I really don’t want to get rid of the stock head unit but I will gut everything else!

You can keep the head unit with a DSR, AMPPro or similar device. The speakers are a weak link but the system as a whole sucks. You can get decent sound with upgrading everything but the HU. The best sound will come from a full upgrade

 

All of it sucks. I have already replaced the amp and speakers and it is so much better. One day I will replace the head unit like @Danimal86 has. If you keep the head unit, you will need a sound processor, the

Rockford fosgate DSR1 has a plug and play harness for the tundras.
I would recommend getting un touch with James with Tech12volts, best way is to email him. He builds his boxes here in the USA and can get you set up for your budget.

If your truck is 2019 or older, the factory HU has pretty much zero redeeming qualities. The weakest part of the setup is the stock sub.

 

I was in your shoes, everyone said to ditch the head unit.....I held on for about 3 years, until I couldn't take it any more. The factory head unit is the weak link. Take the $300 or so that you would spend on a dsr1 and put it towards a new head unit. Wireless android auto is amazingly awesome and sound quality is so much better.

Do you lose the integration with the truck like the gauge cluster display when changing head unit?

 

Will you be doing the work yourself? What is your budget?

You can look in to getting the following:

12" shallow sub with box (assuming you have a CM, so the depth will be a challenge. I think it's about 8" on the bottom and about 5" at the top. reference @TundraTex build thread for box measurements [https://www.tundras.com/threads/tundratex-2016-crewmax-audio-build.7394/])
5 channel amp
amp wiring kit
Audio Control LC7i
Audio Control ACR1
JBL amp wiring harness adapter (from my understanding, it allows you to keep the factory amp and add the aftermarket amp downstream and pump the signal to the speakers.)


Bottom line is really your budget. I priced my build out and it cost me just over $600 for materials. I did the install myself and I'm pretty technically inclined. The install took me about 5 hours, which included wire management and labeling them for future reference.
